Portland Union StockyardB, Oct. 2. It would bo straining the market somewhat Just now to quote anything over $7.15 for hogs, for this has been the extreme top for late arrivals. This means practically a decline of 10 cents from tho former high level, the trade being unable to secure $7.25 for anything that has lately arrived. The quality Is not worth It say the buyers. '1 he run of hogs In the yards is some what better and because of this pack ers are not Inclined to bid quite aa high us they were a short time ago. The price of hogs ha reached such a high limit of late that packers say they ure unabln to make any money and fur this reaaon their anxiety to se cure supplies Is somewhat decreased. t)npiU.- this fact, however. It is quite probable that If someone haa quality out of the ordinary they would be able to secure a slight premium over present quotations, but It would be unfair to call this the real market. Few Top Hmth Are Arriving. The run of cattle was not so heavy In the yards during the past 21 hours, total arrivals showing 100 head com pared with 065 yesterday and none for this day a year ago. Among the late run of tattle only small portion have been select quality and for this reason former high price levels have not been leeched. The trade Is ftlll ' Inquiring for select stock and is prob-j ably willing to continue the $1.25 price for top ste-rs for awhile but this class of goods is not coming so pack ers are not bidding up on the medium or poor grade. In fact they scarcely care to buy off-quality stock at all. In the sheep branch of the local market today, arrivals were Jut fair, with little select quality coming forth. Sales of wethers are still being made around $3.25, which Is the extreme top for late trading. Arrivals of shop today were 250 head compared with 730 yesterday and 696 for this same day a year ago.
