HERMISTON .MAN SHOT DUCKS TOO SOON George Johnson of Hermiston was sentenced this morning by Justice Joe Parkes to pay n f . ne of $15 or serve seven days in jail for shooting ducks before the season opened. He pre fers to serve out his time and is now doing so. Johnson was arrested yesterday by Otto Turner, deputy game warden, and he was brought up from Hermiston last evening. He is acused of hav ing hunted ducks during the latter part of August. Furthermore he was found to have hunted without a li cense. Following the announcement yesterday that the dif ferences between the mechanics nnd the Canadian Pacific railroad were settled, hundreds of workmen nre participating In a wild scramble to day for their old jobs. They will re turn to work tomorrow. The terms of settlement nre secret, but It is an nounced that they are agreeable and honorable to both sides. Burglars Hide Dynamite. Chlco, Cal., Oct. 6. The discovery of a box of dynamite caps under the rear porch of the residence of Mrs. J Barrick, adjoining the rear of the First National bank, today, lends to the belief that a robbery was planned In which the vaults of the bank were to have been blown open. SCHOOL ATTENDANCE 20 PER GENT MORE There are nearly 150 more enrolled In tho Pendleton city schools this year than last. This is the largest Increase In n'ny one year for a number of years. According to nn enrollment census taken this morning by City Superin tendent Landers, the number enroll ed at the present time in the flv? sihools Is 925. or exactly 145 more than were enrolled nt the same time last year. With one exception each school shows an Increase In attend ance. The one exception is to be found in the Lincoln or north side school and this Is accounted for by the fact that two or three families with a largo number of children, moved away.
