E 1 POSTPONED Tl District Attorney Phelps has re ceived word from the railroad com mission to the effect that the rate hearing which was to have been held In this city September 2Sf has been postponed until later in the fall. The date set proved to bo Inconvenient both for the district attorney and at least one member of the commis sion, so It was decided to hold the hearing at some later date. This was to have been tho tlmo when the question of the proposed reduction in freight rates on grain should bo taken up. Representatives of the farmers have their evidence ready to present, but it Is not believed that the postponement of tho hearing will at weaken the case of the grow ers and shippers. The hearing which was to have been held at Wasco, September 22, was al so postponed and will probably be about the same time as the Pendle ton hearing. Seattle, Sept. 25. One of tho pic turesque figures of the western fron tier passed away last evening when James C. Nagle, who was Intimately connected with the pursuit and cap ture of the bandits yiho terrorized Nevada a few years ago when they attempted to rob a stage carrying gold from the mines Into Nevada City, died. For 16 years Naglo held public office In Nevada City and he was under-sheriff when he made the famous capture of the bandits who shot Sheriff William Tasco, and Da vis Douglas. Leslie Carter Dead. Chicago, Sept. 25. Leslie J. Car ter, who was formerly the husband of Mrs. Carter, the actress, who Is bet ter known by his name than her own, died here this morning. Carter was a railroad promoter and organized the South Side elevated 'railroad com pany. He was partly asphyxiated last November and has been in a state of conin practically ever since, Foraker Gets Busy. Cincinnati, Sept. 25. In a hor rible condition, having been burned beyond recognition by the forest fires, t-ato reports indicate that Trinidad Is surrounded by flames. Luffen holtz was wiped out last night, and the refugees are arriving here. A score of people are missing. There Is a high wind raging and the fires can not be controlled until It dies.
