Thousands of athletes of all na tions marched before the assembled priests and princes of the church, tfce spectacle forming an unique combi nation of ecclesiastical splendor and gladiatorial prowess. During the past week the night temperatures west of the Cascade mountains aver aged considerably below the normal, while the afternoon temperatures were slightly below the seasonal average. In the eastern portion of the state the nights were warm and the days cool, due to the cloudy weather. Wednes day and Thursday were cool through out the state, and light frost occur red on those mornings In sections of the upper Willamette and Umpuua valleys. Light rain was general over the state on Tuesday and good show ers fell In the eastern portion on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and west of the Cascade mountains on Saturday. The rain was well dis tributed, no heavy showers being re ported from any locality. Xigger, a black female leopard, has been killed by her cage-mate, the Devil, ufter a dfsperate battle In the lion house of the Bronx menagerie.
