With the whole college of cardinals,
thousands of archbishops, bishops
and clergy and representatives of all
the Important governments of the
world filling the stands In the Vati
can gardens, the Tapal Jubilee Inter
national athletic competitions were
formally opened today by His Holi
ness, Tope Plus X, says a dlsptch
from Rome.
Thousands of athletes of all na
tions marched before the assembled
priests and princes of the church, tfce
spectacle forming an unique combi
nation of ecclesiastical splendor and
gladiatorial prowess.
The opening of today's tournament
marks the first time In the history of
the Roman Catholic church that ath
letic sports have formed a great fea
ture of the golden Jubilee of a pon
tiff's ordination to the priesthood.

The trophy sent by the United States,
through the Uev. Francis J. Sullivan,
president of the Catholic Athletic
League of New York, Is exposed In the
apartments of Secretary Merry del
Val. The trophy Is a solid silver cup,
two feet high, having in front the
American and Papal flags, with the
Inscription: "The American Trophy
from the Catholic Roys of Xew York
to Cardinal Merry del Val, to be Con
tested for by the Boys of Rome." All
around are represented fi cures tak
ing part In American sports, and on
top Is the American eagle.

Medals will be given by the pope to
all winners, and they will be accorded
special honors by His Holiness.

can gardens today are the first ath
letic competitions to disturb their
quietness since the destruction of the
Calipulan circus in the declining days
of the Roman empire. The garden

west of the Cascade mountains aver
aged considerably below the normal,
while the afternoon temperatures were
slightly below the seasonal average.
In the eastern portion of the state the
nights were warm and the days cool,
due to the cloudy weather. Wednes
day and Thursday were cool through
out the state, and light frost occur
red on those mornings In sections of
the upper Willamette and Umpuua
valleys. Light rain was general over
the state on Tuesday and good show
ers fell In the eastern portion on
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,
and west of the Cascade mountains
on Saturday. The rain was well dis
tributed, no heavy showers being re
ported from any locality. The sun
shine was about normal In the west
ern portion of the state, but there'

Xew York. Sept. 22. Xigger, a
black female leopard, has been killed
by her cage-mate, the Devil, ufter a
dfsperate battle In the lion house of
the Bronx menagerie. Hundreds of
persons, Including women and chil
dren, watched the combat. The keep
ers made vigorous efforts to separate
tiie fighters, but could do nothing
with them.
For a week or more the couple had
not been on good terms, and Xigger
carefully kept to the corner of the
cage, avoiding her angry spouse.
