The Commercial National bank of Chicago, In its annual crop and conr rnerclal review for 1908, reviews the Condition and probable yield of the Wheat crop for this year as follows: We submit the following as a sum mary of the reports from over four thousand correspondents, touching crop conditions: Serious discrepancies exist this year between the government's wheat crop expectancy and the figures arrived at by our correspondents In the grain states and those reached by the most authoritative" private estimators. The government's figures for Au gust first indicated yields as follows: Winter wheat, 426.000,000, against an Official yield In 1907 of 409,442,000; tprlng wheat, 246,000,000, against the 1907 final of 224.645.000; or a to tal Indicated wheat crop of nearly 672. 000. ono. against about 634.000.- 000 last year. Our own percentages, using the government's indicated yield Is at least 20.nno.000 bushels too high for pring wheat and about 40.000,000 too high for winter wheat. Since August 1 the spring wheat crop suffered ex treme drought and fungus damage In the northwest; and the bureau esti mate of winter wheat production does not take Into account acreage aban doned or otherwise lost from the harvest. The Illinois yield as officially re ported by state authorities reaches thpa(, otw.rt,hln The Blue Rook, Issued by the Bal tlmore & Ohio railroad, says of "The Commonwealth " the hire-put notim. ! ger boat afloat on Inland waters any where In the world; Commonwealth Is the name of the magnificent new steamer of the Fall River line, plying between New York and Boston. This splendid vessel excells In size, speed and magnificence of construc tion and equipment any vessel here tofore built for service on Inland waters. Her length over all Is 456 feet, breadth of hull 55 feet, depth of hull 22 feet, breadth over guards 96 feet. She Is provided with sleeping accommodations for 2000 persons. The Fall River line has long been popular with the tourist, combining a delightful water route with that of rail between the two cities mentioned. For this class of business experience has proven that the broad beam of the side-wheel steamer Insures stead iness, and the unpleasant vibration Is overcome, assuring passengers a' com fortable voyage In rolling seas. The Commonwealth is built of steel ! with a registered speed of 22 miles j an hour. Extra precaution has been ' taken in regard to safety. Seven bulk. heads extend to the main dock, and a double hull and the space between the bottoms is divided into water tight compartments. These are col lision bulkheads at each side of the .steamer at the guards, and a bulk- nardly 20, ono, 000 against a govern. ment Indication of 30,212.000. Good opinion in the trade Is that the bu reau figures ignore loss by floods In Indiana. Texas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. It is asserted by traveling observ ers that thousands of acres In those regions were not cut at all and that large areas will produce from three to 10 bushels per acre at the thresh er. Reports from our own souces thrpughout the belt are exceedingly uneven, but when tabulated without weighting, show a total crop 24.000, 000 bushels under the August Indica tion of the government. Allowing for acreage abandoned and iummlng up, we feel Justified In con cluding that the 1908 crop of mer chantable wheat will scarcely equal that gathered last year. Considering the low world's stacks and the depleted reserves In retail hands everywhere, with an Inevitably strong export demand, it seems rea sonable to expect a high level of prices for breadstuffs throughout the crop year. She carries a life-saving crew and will have one-third more life preserv ers, life-rafts and buoys than are re quired by the United States govern ment regulations. Every precaution Is taken against fire thermostat and a watchman's clock system keep watchful eyes over a most effective fire-sprinkling system throughout the vessel. A modern electric light plant sup plies her thousands of Incandescent lights, as well as a powerful search light, electrical elevators and electri cal blowers for ventilating the cabin. Ar rangements have been made at Yerkes observatory today for taking the first of a series of photographs of Halley's comet, a celestial visitor which is now making a tour of these parts after a lapse of 75 years. Exposures will be made at frequent intervals throughout this fall and winter and next spring, and the ob servatory directors expect to produce the most remarkable and accurate photographs of a comet ever taken. The comet has traveled through a billion miles of space since Its last appearance in the vicinity of the earth and Is the most sensational of all the hobo wanderers of the uni verse. ' The comet will not be visible to the naked eye. however, until well along In 1909, and will swoop Into its peri helion, the point of Its course closest to the sun about May 10, 1910. It bears the name of Edmund Hal ly, a great English astronomer and friend of Xewton, who observed It in 1682, studied previous records of it and staked his reputation on the pre diction of Its return within 75 yeads. His prediction came true, though Halley himself was dead. Since then astronomers have kept close tab on it and are now able to estimate Its appearance within a few days. Scientists at Yerkes observatory de clare that there Is no possibility of the comet coming neaf enough to the earth to cause any damage and that the likelihood of a collision with this or any other comet Is practically ne gligible, and unworthy of considera tion by a scientific mind.
