Portland, Ore., Aug. 31. "Adver tising Oregon" Is tho title of a page in "Printer's Ink," one of the most widely known of advertising journals. And It Is no wonder that tho state's work along those lines has attracted this attention, for no portion of Amer ica Is circulating the attractive liter ature that burdens the malls of Oje gon every day In the year. Now that the colonist rates are to be In effect (and they begin tomor row) every citizen of the state should feel It his duty to advertise the fact In his personal correspon dence and to aid In every possible way the commercial organizations which are working to Increase the state's population. Portland la Host. Portland Is to act as host to the American Bar Association today, and delegates who attended the convention at Seattle this past week say that many members of the association plan trips through Oregon before re turning to their eastern homes. Invited to Japan. The United Chambers of Commerce of Japan have extended an Invitation tc tho representative business men ot the cities along the Pacific coast to participate In an excursion, which will leave San Francisco on September 2n! Those preferring to go by another route, however, will Join tho party In Japan the entire trip will con. sume about three months, and the visitors will see the famous chrys anthemums at their best. New Rook on Oregon. The most elaborate book ever pub EXCHANGES THE EMPIRE haw been sinking It for the past two months, and the company, while knowing all the time that oil was there, is highly gratified at being In a position to also convince the pub lic of this fact. It Is said the product of the well Is of the consistency of thin, yellowish glycerine, and has a strong odor. It may be that upon refining It will al so yield a substantial per cent of gas oline, which Is fully as valuable In this neighborhood as kerosene, al so there Is not so much of it used. l ino Cattle from John Day. One of the best bands of cattle that has been market In recent years from Grant county was sold by George Ra der at Pendleton last week, says the Long Creek Ranger. These were bunch grass cattle and numbered 1, 000 head. They averaged 1212 pounds and the steers sold at $3.76 and the cows at $2.70 per hundred weight. Eight or ten of this band weighed over 1400 while several were over 1600. The top notcher tipped the scales at 1775 but had reached the 1900 mark when he left his Grant county range. Mr. Rader said to the representative of this paper that there were all man ner of grafts worked on the cattle man between here and Pendleton and that they were Imposed upon all along the way. Eight cents a head was charged in some localities for pasture over night on scanty grass and water was denied In several places. Walter Winchester, who drove the car of Chairman Hower, found that In. a full 4000 miles on the Glidden tour route he used but 500 gallons of gasoline, says the Spokane Chronicle. Winchester figured up the cost and found that gasoline through the en tire route averaged 22 cents, ranging from 15 to 30 cents. He carried from seven to nine people or an average all through of eight and baggage for all. The record Is Interesting, for the Pierce Arrow car was of six cyl inders. There is slated for this county a large settlement of Swedish people to come In and take farms this year. This means much when this excellent class of settlers come to help up, as they have been the uubuildlpg power In Minnesota and The Dakotas. lone Proclalmer. lished on Oregon is In process oi preparation by a firm whose book on other sections of America are In a class by themselves. They have enlisted the services of Benjamin A. Glfford of The Dalles, In securing hundreds of choicest views for this use. Mr. Gifford's collection of Co luinbla river photographs which adorn the convention hall of the Port, l.-.nd Commercial club, have been re. sponsible . for many tourists taking this river trip. MOTNTAIN HEIGHTS IN EASTERN OREGON Strangers sometimes ask the dis tance to the beautiful mountains, from town, says the Baker City Dem ocrat. The Eagle mountains are almost 40 miles away, while the highest peak of the Elkhonis, Rock Creek Butte, Is just 14 miles In an air line and Is 90A3 feet above the sea, a lit tle more than a mile higher than this city, which Is 3446 feet. Elkhorn Peak Is 12 miles away and Is 8922 feet. The mountain opposite Haines is 13 miles distant and Is $232 feet high. Coyote Butte, near Haines, Is 11 miles and 3S70 feet high. The crest of the hill on the west of Baker City is almost two miles and Is 4802 feet, being 1366 feet above the town. Lone Pine Butte two and a half miles east of town, Is 5077 feet. Fuel Famine Tlireatens Wallace. Some fear Is felt that Wallace will experience a shortage of coal before the coming winter ends, says a Wal lace Item. It Is Intimated that a sharp advance in the price of best grades may come about the first of September. Apprehension Is based on the possibility of a strike among coal miners In the Montana and Wyoming fields, which have been threatened. Outside of the mines and companies using large quantities and shipping Independently of local Jobbers, Wal lace uses In the neighborhood of 3000 tons of coal annually. Orders are pouring In upon dealers, who are be hind at present In filling orders. Some young men work awfully hard to land an easy job.
