Walgus Strong, the second Indian to dlo by tho hand of James Coo-see-l Pahnot, bade farewell to his Indian frlenda last evening and passed to the happy hunting ground, says the Yak ima Republic. He died at Toppenlsh, where he had been taken by frlenda some time ago. Medical aid had been refused, the strange superstition of their kind remaining with the Indian until the last moment. Dr. Frank offered to take care of Strong some time ago, but the Indiana would not permit him to do so, pre ferring to put Into use their own med icine men and hold their own cere monies over the dying man. The direct cause of Strong's death la nothing more than blood poison. When he was shot by Coo-see-I In the latter part of June, the bullet simply entered his arm. Had It been removed at the time there Is no doubt but that he would have recovered. Coo-soe-1 Is In the county Jail await, ing to be arraigned when the fall term of court opens. He Is a bad Indian and hns caused more or less trouble or the reservation for some time. He quarreled with Strong last June over some trivial affair, resulting In his shooting Strong In the arm and mur dering his mothcr-ln-law outright. He also threatened several other Indians and Is said to have shot at several In making his escape to the hills and on tj Salem, Ore. He was captured at Palein and brought back here. Good Hay Crop. With the Bloom of a few weeks ago hovering over them as to poor crops ranchers In Powder valley who have finished their hay harvest, and those who hiive becomo well along In the work, have been subject to a most pleasant surprise, for from every hand comes the report that the hay crop of this section Is to be a big one, says the Baker City Herald. On the old Oarren ranch, which Is being farmed this year by J. T. Mas ters, It Is claimed there never has been raised such splendid hay. Those car lug for the crop state It Is almost Im possible to handle the heavy growth, and the sight that meets people's eyes who pass the hayfleld Invariably causes them to stop anif Investigate. When harvest hands first entered the fields It was thought three tons to the acre would be a big crop, but as UK AITI1TL WORDS IX)R OREGON SCEXKRY. Rev. J. D. Glllilan of La Grande writes the following beautiful sketch of Oregon scenery for the La Grande Morning Star: You may take your trips along the lordly Columbia, whose Shimmering sunsets ore the envy of the Italian, where the fainting sun tired from the long race of tho day stoops to mirror himself over the placid river of Ore gon to make his evening toilet before retiring, tucked away In carmine- fringed, golden eloud wrapper; or fol low any of tho other enchanted trails already blazed and blazoned, taking you to some advertised "heart of na ture" If you will; but there are realms not "ufar" and not fabled, spots where sylvan nymphs sure dance In the long summer nights .even If we are oblig ed at a close and last analysts to find thoso sylphs mosquitoes only. Here and there on the long drives we traveling men nave tne privilege of making, far from human suspl' elon of the rare splendid, we see sights sufficient to repay the lonesome natu rallst, stealthily surprising hla coy divinity, Rara. Down In the deep woods of the John Day, the tall forests of the Wal Iowa, or where Uncle Sam has set his prohibitory seal and guarded his vldgln domain at the hand of the for est ranger, there are to be had occa sional glimpses of untrammeled fast nesses filled yet with the life Captain Bonneville saw and that was In then) when Bryant wrote of the "Woods where rolls .the Oregon And hears no sound save his own dashlngs." The unscared deer peeps at you from the trail side, and bay elk lifts his forest of horns and disappears; the smaller denizens of the primeval wastes wink as you pass as If they were but awakening to a now experi ence. Woo to the marauder who would devastate these untouched haunts and drive terror to their unthrllled hearts! One application of ManZan Pit Remedy, for all forms of Piles, soothes, reduces Inflammation, sore ness and Itching. Price 60c guaran teed. Sold A. C. Koeppen & Bros. If you see It In the East Oregonlan, It'a so. they started the mowers they became convinced that four tons to the acre l. a reasonable estimate. Other ranchers report a similar showing, and the Indications are that hay will be very plentiful and of a superior quality. A New Inland City. Cleaning away the debris that the company can rebuild on the same site If It makes such decision, the Pioneer Flouring Mill company at Island City today set a force of men at work and thereby takes the first step In repairing what the conflagration of last week so effectually razed, says tho La Grande Observer. It Is more than likely, however, that tho company will not rebuild on the same site, as plana are now under con slderatlon to construct the plant at a point further east than where the ruins mark the spot occupied by the big plant before the fire. That the company will rebuild the mill and warehouse Is assured, but definite plans have not been worked out. The debris will be cleared re gardless of whether or not the com pany decides to use the same site or a more satisfactory place. Judging from the plans that have been announced, Island City the new will be a city more thrifty and more enterprising than Island City of the past. The smaller losers are going to rebuild on a more extensive scale and the heavier losers will expend thou sands of dollars to rebuild that which was destroyed, but In such a way that the new buildings will be larger, bet ter and more adequately equipped to J handle the large business better than they were before the fire. Is Hubcr a Lost Man? When Frank Huber, the cowboy who had trouble with the Dago boot black, left Baker City yesterday he had a flask of liquor In his pocket, and started his horse out of town at a rapid pace, says the Baker City Her ald. Later he was seen In company with a man wlio had a pack horse with him. They were both riding fast, and Huber seemed to be almost unable iv Keep nis saddle. Tills morning a horse, supposed to have been the one ridden by Huber, was caught near Auburn, and a search Is being made for the rider. Up to a late hour this afternoon he had not been found. I now keep them on hand for sunburn, etc., and use Cuticura Soap for shaving. I could write a great deal more in reference to my cure but do not want to take more of your time. William H. Her feet were sore, too, and she couldn't wear her shoes. I think she was poisoned by running through weeds but the doc tor said it waa eczema. I tried several remedies but failed to find a cure. Then I sent for Cuticura Soap and Cuticura Ointment whioh cured her in two weeks. I find Cuticura the beet I ever tried for any kind of sore and I hope I shall never be without it.
