The'carrlages of the Russian nobles, low, little wagons with the horses hitched under a great yoke of bent wood over their necks and drivers so padded that their rear view Is some thing like the view of the north end of an elephant going south, and at tenuated country wagons drawn by scrawny looking horses: dinky little horse cars and an occasional, electric train added variety to the scene. The foot passengers are even more motley In appearance well dressed men and women, gaudily bedecked jublic women and girls -from the dance halls, miserable and hideous beggars, soldiers In fifty varieties of uniforms, Jews, all In coats that come to their ankles, and skull caps, some prosperous looking, many in miser able rags, some with ringlets and many who bow crlngingly with un covered heads as you pass and at the same time curse you under their breath with that awful curse of the Hebrew may your Incoming and out growing be accursed, your waking and aleeplng: may bolls treak out on the, back of your neck, your hair fall out There Is really no need for walking much, for the drosky cabs will haul you any place for 20 kopeks (10 cents) and If you want to be regarded as nobles you add 5 kopeks (2 Va cents) to the fare. Otherwise I have found nothing that is cheap, and the graft of the tip Is about 100 per cent worse than in Germany, where I had thought It was the limit George Nicholas Ifft. Springfield, Mo., Aug. 11. One of the most representative gatherings ever held In the agricultural Interests of the state marked the opening to day of the first annual convention of the Missouri Farmers' union. The state union Is affillr.ted with the na tional organization and has had a re remarkable growth during the last year. Organizers are now reported to be pushing the work In every coun ty of the state. It Is expected that at the present meeting It will be de cided to establish a newspaper organ of the union. The organization Is based on economic lines and has for Its purpose the restriction of crops and the maintenance of prices for ag ricultural products. How to Avoid Appendicitis. Decatur, Ala., Aug. 11. A meeting of the Masons of this district was commenced here today and will last crowd the steps of the many churches I three days.
