There's not a place In earth or t heaven, There's not a task to mankind given. There's not a blessing or a woe, There's not a whispered yes or no, There's not a life, or death, or birth That has a feather's weight of worth, Without a woman in It Selected. .! WHAT SUGGESTION' WILL DO. Reading, Pa., has been recently startled by a freak negro curing whooping cough by kissing white children in the mouth. For the past two weeks, during an epidemic of whooping cough this negro has been both busy and successful. Nobody believes that the kiss of a negro has any virtue aa a medicine, but It is declared by highly responsi ble people that cures have been effect ed by this outlandish performance. It is simply an evidence of what suggestion will do. Some old "gran ny"' told her neighbors of a child be ing cured by a negro's kiss, and as the story flew from mouth to mouth, peo ple began to believe it and constantly suggested it to neighbors until cures have followed. Had the same old "granny" made people believe that the kiss of a Po lander or a Bohemian on the sole of the foot ,or elsewhere on the body, would cure whooping cough, this rem edy, and not a negro's kiss, would have leaped into prominence in Read ing. And had people believed that a Po lander's kiss on the sole of the foot would effect a cure, the negro would not have been lionized. But it would have been the Polander's "day." The cures effected by this freakish method in Reading are results of men- til upfteion This potent force will some day revolutionize medical set ence. UMATILLA'S SITREME TEST. The season of 1908 will go down In the history of I'm.uiilu county as the year In which the supreme climatic test was applied to her agricultural land. With but little snow In the moun tains during the preceding winter and with no rain during the 'growing sea son, crops have thrived and are yield ing well in all sections of the county. (The test has been severe and con vincing. One farmer declared that he had marked up the price of his wheat " land 25 per cent since threshing this week, when his wheat yield was made known. (e Is Justified In doing It. His land and all of the wheat land In the county has proved Its virtue this year. Hereafter there will be no alarm at temporary drought. The matchless soil of Umatilla county will stand the test. It requires but little moisture to yield enormously. As a result of this test applied by nature, the greatest of all alclMyrnlffts, the price of wheat land In this coun ty lias actually advanced. It is worth more In dollars and cents than ever. The knowledge that it will pass through the fires of a rainless season and yield handsome returns, Is worth a million dollars to the county. - PENDLETON THE BEAUTIFUL. Five years from now Pendleotn will be so changed In appearance that those who know It at ")Mnt will scarce recognize It as the same place. For the town Is starting upon an era of Improvement that Is destined to make It a different city. In the past Pendleton has been too busy to make all the Improvements Justified In a town of Its size and wealth. It has been a new town and springing up ns It did from amidst the sagebrush it Is not surprising that the aesthetleal side was neglected for the moment. The rancher breaks the sod upon his claim before he paints his house or sets out a flower garden. But Pendleton Is now rast the pio neer stage and the day for Improve ment is at hand. The start was made when the streets in the business sec tion were paved. Since then other betterments have followed naturally. This fall will see the completion of h-vee Improvements, of the city hall and the extension of the sewer sys tem to the 'west end of town. Five years from now Pendleton will have a mountain water supply, a city park, a beautiful cemetery .fine driv ing streets and public buildings that will be shown with pride to visitors In the city. In the residence sections the homes will be better cared for be cause the spirit of Improvement will be In the air. Lawns will be prettier than now. old fences will 'be removed, concrete walks will be seen every where ,and the sides of the street In the residence districts will be parked. It is needless to say that these changes will make the town a better place In which to live. They will make It an ideal residence town for it already has the climate. After a few years wealthy eastern Oregon people will not go to Portland to live. In stead of that the more fortunate fam ilies of western Oregon will come here to dwell In a town where they may have the benefits of good air and sun shine as God Intended they should. PREMATURE REJOICING. There has been a good deal of mild rejoicing In a certain class of newspa pers lately over the alleged or reported failure of the three-cent fare regime that under Mayor Tom L. Johnson's leadership was put Into effect a few weeks ago In Cleveland, says the Ore gon Dally Journal. But this felicita tion of the organs of combined capital ism that Is Inclined to become over hearing may be premature. Consider able chuckling, speaking figuratively, has been Indulged In over the fact that for the month of May the Cleve land Municipal Traction company showed a deficit of $50,000. So fail ure of the three-cent fare theory and the downfall of Johnson was gleefully predicted in many editorial columns. This may happen yet, but such a result Is not as certain as some peo hope. In May the company was struggling with a big strike and gen eral business depression. ' In June the deficit was not half so much. The president of the company predicted last week that there would be no de ficit .that the balance would be about even for July. At this rate it will not take many months to wipe out that $75,000 of deficit and have a balance on the right side of the ledger. The effect of the redurtlon has been to Increase the traffic already to the extent of 100,000 passengers a day. And as business 'continues to pick up It may be expected that the revenues of the company will increase. So It looks as If the three-cent fare experiment might not fail, after all. Tom Johnson Is not only a "stayer" In a fight, but he is a good business man besides. It may be his turn to crow next. WHY WE ARE LOSING SOUTH AMERICAN TRADE. In answering the question, "why is Europe robbing us of our South Amer ican trade?" Emerson Hough In Suc cess magazine, says: Because we are thoughtless as to our transportation. Because on a great deal of our products we pay six times as much for freight as we need to pay. Because we laud traction, with all Its friction, with all Its wastp against water transportation, which has a free right of way, which has no rails to be removed, and no large sal ary list to pay. Because we use only steam where we might employ elec tricity and gasoline and the winds of heaven and those mighty rivers flow ing steadily to the sea. We all because we pit politics against statesmanship; because we pit sectionalism against nationalism; be cause we pit state rights against the Monroe doctrine; because we do many other wholly foolish and absurd things which make parts of our wholly fool ish and absurd reasons for pot devel oping the natural and foreordained transportation of this lavishly provid ed country. In short, we do this be cause we have never learned that water runs down hill, and because we have never noticed on the map, or anywhere else, that our streams run down from our producing regions from the places where we raise wheat, coal. Iron, livestock, and the like all manner of heavy freight. Colonist rates from all points in the east to all points In Oregon become effective September 1, and remain in force for two months. Every citizen of Pendleton should see that their friends in the east are made acquaint- Is Pe-ru-na Useful for Catarrh? Should a list of the ingredients of Pe runa be submitted to any medical ex pert, of whatever school or nationality, he would be obliged to admit without reserve that each on of them was cf undoubted valuo in chronic catarrhal diseases and had stood the test of many years' experience in the treatment of such diseases. THESE CAN EE NO DISPUTE ABOUT THIS WHAT EVER Perunaiscomposedofthemost efficacious and universally used herbal remedies for catarrh. Every ingred ient of Peruna has a reputation of its own in the cure of some phase o f catarrh. Peruna brings to the home the COM BINED KNOW LEDGECF SEVERAL SCHOOLS OF MEDICINE in the treat ment of catarrhal diseases; brings to the home the scientific skill and knowl edge of the modern pharmacist; and last but not lenst.brings to the home the vast and varied experience of Dr. Hart man, in the use of catarrh remedies, and in the treatment of catarrhal diseases. The fact is, chronio catarrh is a dis ease which is very prevalent Many thousand people know they have chronic catarrh. They have visited doctors over and over again, and been told that their case is one of chronic catarrh. It may be of the nose, throat, lungs, stomach or some other internal organ. There is no doubt as to the na ture of the disease. The only trouble is the remedy. This doctor has tried to cure them. That doctor has tried to prescribe for them. BUT THEY ALL FAILED TO BEING ANY RELIEF. Dt. Hartman'8 ioa is that a catarrh remedy can be made on a large scale, as he is making it; that it can be made honestly, of the purest drugs and ol - the strictest uniformity. His idea is that this remedy can be supplied di rectly to the people, and no more be charged for it than is necessary fox the handling of it No other household remedy so uni versally advertised carries upon the label the principal active constituents, showing that Peruna invites the full inspection of the critics. ' ed with this fact. A few lines In each letter is all that would be necessary to bring hundreds of prospective home seekers to Umatilla county, during the two months the rates are In effect. After harvest comes the district fair. Towns and individuals intending to have exhibits should be busy now for the time is short and rivalry will be keen. When the cemetery water system has been installed and the city of the dead is abloom with flowers, people will no longer be afraid to die here. REGENERATE. (Kdmund Vance Cooke in Success" Magazine.) It used to be boys asked their pas How large great Alexander was. But if the boys should ask t'Tilay, They'd add, "And where did Alex play?" Boys once, at least I've heard they did, Were wont to envy Pirate Kidd, But now they say, "That yarn's a dream; There ain't-no Kidd on Pittsburg's teaml" And once, as all boys know by heart, Napoleon's name was Bonaparte, But every urchin knows today His name's LnJoJe (or Lojoway). So perish all the pests of war Those heroes of earth's abattoir: Throw down the sword; take up the bat; There is no bloody stain on that. Sawmill Rums. A. M. Slocum's sawmill, located near the headwaters of Willow creek was destroyed by fire Tuesday night, says the Heppner Gazette. The loss Is estimated by Mr. Slocum at $8000 with no Insurance. The mill crew was awakened at about 11 o'clock at night by the fire, which was already beyond control. It is not known how the fire got started. Everything being very dry, the flames spread rapidly to the lum ber yard. Everything about the mill Including all the lumber In the yard, was completely destroyed.
