Boston Is now preparing for a million dollar con ventlon, the. 25th biennial session of the Knights of Pythias, which will be entertained, making It the largest Kutherlng that any fraternal organl Izatlon has ever held In the Hub. The local committee 1 dally In receipt of telegrams and letters asking that ac commodutions be reserved for large delegations, and theso come from every part of the Union and Canada As features of the conclave, there will bo two grand parades, which will' make even staid Boston sit up and take notice. The first, a military parade, will take place on the afternoon of Tues day, August 4. About 15,000 of tho uniform rank will only be In line un der command of Major General Ar thur L. Stozzert, of St. Paul. On the following day about 20,000 men of tho subordinate lodges will marcn under command of Chief Marshal George E. Wragg. The personnel of the parade will Include large delegations rrom an parts of the United States, number ing representatives from lodges In Cunadu, Hawaii, Cuba and perhaps China. Interest In the affair and In the competition for the prizes that will be offered Is something unprece dented. No Expense Kpaml. To say that the convention and the parades will represent the expendi ture of a million dollars would be falling far short of the -mark by a considerable figure. The committee at the grand lodge of Massachusetts, which Is the host, will alone spend more than $70,000. In addition the 32 lodges of Boston will each spend $500 to $1500 for entertainment and dlfplay. Some lodges, Individuals In cluded, will spend $5000 In this way. The competition for prizes extends to Seattle. The uniform rank parade will be entirely military and the value of the prizes will total $11,000. In the lodge parade on Wednesday there will be gorgeous display by floats. One of the most Interesting companies will be the Pythian Sisters, who have promised at least seven floats. It will take at least three hours for the Wednesday parade, the long est .to pass one point. Many of the lodges will appear In PEST 1TRXED INTO PROFITABLE INDUSTRY. The depart ment of agriculture not so many years ago Issued a bulletin, with some set entlflc hints as to rabbit extermina tion, and told graphically of the rab bit hunts, -or round-ups, wherein the citizens of perhaps several counties got together, bulk a big trap, and then chased Br'er Rabbit In a fast en closing circle, until he ran Into the corral, where he was slaughtered by the thousands with clubs. Br'er Rab bit was a destroyer and a liability not an asset. But In these progressive days, Tas mania, one of the British colonies, has found a way to make bunny a good cash asset. He Is trapped, split open, frozen and shipped . all the way to England, whore bis fur 1s not unac ceptable. In 1906, $2,391,561 In fro zen rabbits were exported to Eng land, together with $2,323,510 In rab bit skins. Consul Henry D. Baker, speaking of the Tasmanlnn rabbit Industry do claret that the trapping gives em ployment to a very large number of men, and that complete freezing plants are in operation at Hobart and Launceston, for preparing bunny for export. Chicago, July 25. Nineteen out of every 100 Chicago babies under 1 year of age have died during the first 22 days of July. This Is about one fourth of the quoted death rate of the city. There have been 10 deaths dally from bowel diseases of children under 2 years of age. One of the noteworthy points of the city physician's report Is In an Italian section of the city Gault Court. Here It was expected that, owing to very congested conditions, a deplorable state of affairs would be revealed. Just the reverse was found. Crowds were there, and dirt was there but babies, strange to say, were un accountably healthy and strong. Al most all of them were found feeding on breast milk In marked contrast to conditions in much cleaner sections of the city, where cows' and canned milk are the diet of the Infants. According to Dr. Hemah Spalding, of the health department, the com mon house fly Is one of the great con tributors to the complaints prevalent among the city's children. From a grandstand on the Common the parude will be reviewed by Governor Guild, Mayor Hlbbard and Supreme Chancellor Judge Charles A. Barnes of Illinois. Bkiinlul Session. The meeting Is the occasion of the biennial assembly of the Uniform Rank, Knights of Pythias. They will encamp at Franklin park In 4000 tents which have been ordered for the occasion. Their competition for the $11,000 prizes Is by efficiency In drill as well as showing at Inspec tion, and at the field there will be Interesting cavalry and Infantry man euvers. In the business meeting of the con vention, which opens August 4, It Is expected that complete harmony will prevail. Chancellor Barnes will pre side. A Massachusetts man, Dr. Sid ney Woodworth, of Fltchburg, will be a strong candidate for supreme vice chancellor. On the evening of the opening day there will take place a reception to the supreme lodge, at which Speaker John N. Cole, of the legislature, will preside. The governor, mayor and officers of the order are expected to make addresses. On August 6 will occur a reception and ball to the uniform ran kin Mechanics hall One of the most Interesting feat ures for those within the order will be exemplification of the first and third ranks in Mechanics' hall on the evening of August 7 by Peter Woodland lodge, of Lynn. The great hall will probably be filled by Pyth- lans who will want to see this team of one hundred or more men work with Its fabulously elaborate para phernalia. During the stay of the knights there will be a never ceasing program of sightseeing trips, ocean excursions and shore dinners. The reception of the host of visitors Is In charge of a committee of 25. CREDITORS TAKE A HERO'S MEDAL. Saved PaHseflgvrs and Crew of Ship From Drowning in 1905. Trenton, N. J., July 26. Captain Mark Casto, of Pleasantvllle, hero of the rescue of the crew and passen gers of the ship Cherokee, wkhlch stranded at Atlantic City three years ago, has filed a voluntary petition In bankruptcy In the United States dis trict court. His assets amount to $6865 and his liabilities to $7594. Captain Casto claims as exempt from the operation of the bankruptcy law the Carnegie medal which he re ceiped In recognition of the heroism he displayed in the rescue of the Cherokee passengers. He places the Intrinsic value of this medal at $200, which Is the maximum amount upon which exemption may be claimed In this state. In doing this Captain Casto is com pelled to relinquish for the benefit of his creditors a $300 medal that was given him by the Clover club of Philadelphia, which also tendered him a banquet.
