The wheat yield about here will run about 10 bushels less to the acre than last year. Fields ordinarily good for 40 to 4 5 bushels are going 30 bushels. However, the hlch rrlce will bring the farmers' profits up to the usual standard. Bar ley is yielding much better than wheat. Much of the barley has been going 75 bushels to the acre and wheat 30 bushels. Nearly all the combines are out now, and next week It will be easier to make an estimate. Messrs. Roberts and Ketrel, two en terprising young men of Walla Walla, are arranging to reopen the White House saloon for the sale of near beer. The place has been thoroughly cleaned and overhauled. Will Price has returned with his family from Mabton, Wash., where they have been living for the past year. They will take up their resi dence here again. Lodge Officers. Quarterly Meeting. The quarterly meeting of the Meth odist church will be held at the M. E. church Sunday morning and evening. J. D. Lewellen, presiding elder, will officiate. Fishing Party. Black for $6700, or 1670 per acre for 10 acres. This place has been sold a few times of late, and at a consiaeraote increase each time. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. John Couch, July 18. a son, and to Mr. and Mrs. James Kirk of Vincent, July 21, a son. Miss Grace Birdsell has been very 111 for a few days with typhoid fever. The second crop of alfalfa is "being cut in the country about here. It is not as heavy as the first on account of the dry weather. A large number of members of the Lady Maccabee lodge of Walla Walla, Freewater and Milton went to the Tum-a-lum grange hall Thursday for a picnic and they spent a most de lightful day. Grange Meeting Tonight. An Important meeting of the Vin cent grange will be held at the hall tonight, which promises to be attend ed by farmers from all about here, as there will be officials present to discuss matters of great interest to the ranchers. Grain Fire, During an electric storm Thursday the wheat field belonging to Morris Wood was ignited by lightning. The entire field of 300 acres was burned and 160 acres adjoining which be longed to Wait Preston. The Woods land Is known as the old Griffin farm. Mr. Woods says had it not been for the heavy rain, his farm I buildings would have burned. Some of the neighbors saw the forged light ning when It struck. A ReveUiton. The Cause of Many Cadets Force Plebes to Put Ant to Their Hats. West Point, N. Y.. July 25. Eight cadets in the United States military academy here have been sent to their homes as a result of hazing members of the fourth class. They were Wll Ham T. Russell, appointed at large, and Harry G. Weaver Illinois, mem bers of the first class, and Byron O. Jones, New- York; George W. Chase New York; William M. Prude, Ala bama; Isaac Spaulding, Oklahoma William Moltke, Virginia, and James A. Gillespie, of Pennsylvania, mem bers of the third class. Tonight It was learned that hazing at the academy had been going on during the past three months. Never, it can be said, was evidence of haz ing so carefully and skillfully con cealed. Even the cadet officers were kept out of the secret, while as for the plebes, as the fourth classmen are called, all took the hazing un complalningly. The form which the hazing took contested of a requirement that the plebes "fall in" at the first tap of the warning drum instead of waiting the usual five minutes to the final Ti v-.i. ft tZS N?V ST. call. Clement Wadsworth, an employe of the Evening Teller at Lewlston, Idaho, was drowned In the Clearwater river Wednesday.
