It harvesting reports now reaching the city are well-founded, Umatilla county Is not going to fall very short of an average wheat crop this sum mer. Some weeks ago it was the gen eral impression that the yield would be but two-thirds or three-fourths of the normal amount. But such' pes slmlsm is knocked in the head by the returns that are now coming In. Threshing has been on in the north western part of the county for over a week and all reports from that sec tion show that the "light land" couu try will have normal yields this year, At the Ed Delwo place, near Noltn threshing has just been started and a yield of 13 bushels per acre la re- ported. Threshing Is Just Blurting on the reservation and but few reports have been received. Hut In every Instance they are hopeful for the farmers are gutting more wheat per acre than they had expected. At the Schwandt place on the res ervntlon the wheat Is running between 30 and 40 bushels per acre, practi cally a normul yield. Other thresh ers are now being started on the Tom Thompson, Knight Bros., Peringer, Ferguson and other reservation ranches. This section of the country probably Buffered more than any oth er from the drought and it Is known that the crops will be light south of Pendleton. But even in that district they are proving to be better than was anticipated. One instance Is now told of a rancher who had for a time debated whether to thresh his grain or cut It for hay. He finally decided to make a trip around the field with a com bine and on doing so round he had a yield of 18 bushels per acre. The local wheat market has not yet opened and probably will not un til some of the grain is hauled to the warehouses. At present the price, if the market were open, would be about 70 cents. BALLOONIST HICKS INJURED AT BAKER CITY Baker City, July 18. Balloonist Hicks who has been giving exhibitions in this city for several weeks, was In jured by falling from his trapexe Just as he started to ascend from the ground last evening. He became en tangled in the ropes and fell head long, injuring him seriously If not fa tally. It is not yet known Just how1 badly he Is Injured. He is at St Elizabeth's hospital. Roy Alexander leaves tomorrow for Wenaha springs, where he will camp for a couple of weeks with a party of friends. Mrs. C. A. Epplnger will return this evening from La Grande, where she has been visiting as the guest of Mrs. F. S. Ivanhoe. Mrs. W. W. Gates of Sherwood, Mich., is a guest of the Golden Rule while here for a few days looking at the country. Clare Edwards, one of the East Or egonlan carrier boys. Is 111 this week and his route Is being taken by an extra carrier. R. E. Tarbett and family and J. E. Bennett and family will leave Mon day for Meacham. where they will reside for the next year. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Goodman and son Dean, will leave this evening for Meacham for a month's outing. They expect to camp near the town and will remain during the hot weather. A. J. Owen has returned home from Portland, where he attend ed the funeral of Miss Mildred Long who was drowned last Saturday night at Washougal on the Columbia river. W. L. Peacock of Baltimore, Md., Is a guest of Hotel Bowman today while looking over Umatilla county. He Is delighted with the country and will remain for some time in the northwest. Mrs. Shull of East Webb street, will leave this evening for Spokane, where she will visit her daughter Blanch, for a few weeks. She will also visit her sons, Dean, at Starbuck, and Glenn, at La Crosse. Mrs. Arnold Irwin, late Miss Ger tie Burden of Pendleton, niece of Mrs. John T. Shaw, Is the guest of the latter this week. They are visit ing with Mr. and Mrs. Alex Shaw. North Powder News. Rev. J. D. Lewellen, presiding elder of the M E. church, south, for the Pendleton district, will leave this evening for Milton, to hold the third Quarterly conference of the church year tomorrow forenoon. Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Dozler of Nolln ure in the city this afternoon on a trading trip. Threshing is in pro gress In the foothills district adjacent to Nolln and the yield is very satis factory, most of the crops running fiom 22 to 25 bushels per acre. He objected to putting up the ad ditional $250, but when he found he could not secure a reduction he pull ed a wallet from his pocket contain ing at least $1000, and from this put up his ball. That he will be found missing when the time comes for trial Is con fidently believed by the officers de spite the $500 which he has deposited to Insure his appearance. CXAMAXS PLAYERS COMING. Clever Company of Comedians and Players at the Oregon Theater July 22 and 23. The Clamans Piayer3, a company of first class comedians and musicians, will present "The Frontier," a west ern comedy at the Oregon theater on July 23 and on the evening of July 23 will present "Wife in . Name Only," both excellent attractions. Between acts the company will present some high class vaudeville acts and two outside band concerts will be given daily, at noon and 7:30 p. m. Tne company carries its . own band and orchestra, tne band con taining 18 members, and it gives first class attractions, according to press notices which have proceeded them to this city. Exhaus ted from want of food, his clothes In tatters and himself worn out from tramping the mountains for the last three days seeking to evade his pur suers, Adolph Jules, the Italian who last Tuesday shot down 'and killed two fellow countrymen at a construction camp on the Western Pacific and attempted to murder the American foreman and his wife, was captured today at Toll Gate by a smertrrs posse In Plumas county after a sharp fight. Finding himself Intercepted and his retreat cut off, Jules opened fire wlta the rifle with which he had shot Antonio Llberatos and Olovannl Puc cini in the Western Pacific camp. He was quickly surrounded and after many shots were exchanged, finding that he could not break the cordon about him, surrondered to the officers. To prevent a lynching the prisoner was nurrled to Orovilie and placed in jail. Possees from three counties were In pursuit of Jules since the day of his unprovoked crime, which aroused the entire country In that section.
