The I cutoff runs over the original survey I made by Engineer House as early as 1863. Some big cuts were made at I the time the right of way was secur ed, but the project was abandoned I in 1864. The cutoff traverses the old j Griffin farm, now part of South Oma iha, Neb. j The difficulties to be overcome in 'an engineering way was largely in the 'construction of the fills, some of j which are fully a mile long and more than a hundred feet deep. The soli Is a yellow loam character istic of that country, which washes and sinks without warning with the spring freshets. There are also some enor mous cuts In the construction of which the same difficulties had to be over come. It Is a great piece of engi neering pushed to completion.
