Plan Is to Extend Line Northward
to Low is ton in Time.
The Boise Capital News says of
railroad building activity in the Snake
river and Huntington district:
Unusual activity g being manifested
in railroad circles in Huntington and
the Seven Devils mining district, ac
cording to Information recleved by
mining promoters In this city.
It is announced that construction
work has started on the Oregon Short
Line branch out of Hunting to the Ox
Bow tunnel and the Utah Construc
tion company, which has charge of
the work, started a large crew of men
on the line this week.
Another railroad extension which
Is of Interest to mining men is that of
the narrow gauge track from Council
to Landore, the heart of the great min
ing district north of this city. Pro
moters are behind this project and ex
pect to) have operations actively start
ed during the coming summer.
Mainland Brothers, prominent fi
nanciers of Oskosh, Wis., are promot
ing the Oregon Short Line extension
and have put up a large amount of
capital towards making the extension
from Huntington to the Ox Bow.
This road starts from the main line
of the Oregon Railway & Navigation
company at Huntington and follows
the Snake river through a high and
ruRged country to the Ox Bow.
. It Is planned to extend It In time to
Lewlston and other points In the
northern part of the state, but .at the
present time It wll only be continued
to the point where the Ox Bow Is lo
cated. Last fall JO miles of the road
was constructed out of Huntington by
the promoters, but the financial flur
ry came on and operations were In
definitely suspended.
Now that the money market has
again resumed Its normal channels

balance of the road to the Bow, a dis
tance of about 30 miles from the point
to which the road has been built.

ment campaign upon the Union Pa
cific lines It was determined to cut
straight across the horseshoe, the
semi-circle of which traversed nearly
21 miles just after leaving Omaha.,
The new route furnishes an air line
directly west from Omaha, cutting off
nine miles of valley track and reduc
ing the grade about 60 per cent. The
I cutoff runs over the original survey
I made by Engineer House as early as
1863. Some big cuts were made at
I the time the right of way was secur
ed, but the project was abandoned
I in 1864. The cutoff traverses the old
j Griffin farm, now part of South Oma
iha, Neb.
j The difficulties to be overcome in
'an engineering way was largely in the
'construction of the fills, some of
j which are fully a mile long and more
than a hundred feet deep.
The soli Is a yellow loam character
istic of that country, which washes and
sinks without warning with the spring
freshets. There are also some enor
mous cuts In the construction of which
the same difficulties had to be over
come. It Is a great piece of engi
neering pushed to completion.

NINE MILE CUTOFF
COST $3,500,000
With the completion of the Lane
cutoff, connecting Omaha with Elk
horn on the main line of the Union
Pacific, one of the greatest, pieces of
engineering ever attempted Is brought
to fruition. It has taken nearly four
years to complete the work, and the
difficulties to be overcome were such
that as late as a couple of years ago
the engineers In charge seriously con
sidered abandoning the project.
The main object of the new line Is
to reduce the distance, to make- a
shorter line from coast to coast; to
have the shortest line from the Mis
souri to the Pacific to annihilate
time and space, says an Omaha pa
per.. The cutoff Is eleven and a half miles
long, and reduces the mileage on the
wain line nine miles, to say nothing
of eliminating one of the most trou
blesome stretches of the entire system.
The new line Is one of the most ex
pensive ever built In tKis country,
costing $3,500,000 for the eleven and
a half miles.
When the Union Pacific, with gov
ernment aid, sought a line out of
Omaha, It followed the valleys In or
der to avoid the serious grades and
cuts Incident to a direct line between
Omaha and the Platte valley. This
line has been used ever since, or for
over 40 years. In the general Improve-
