Preparations are now all under way for the fair and races to be held In this city October 12 to 19 Inclusive, says the Baker City Herald. The di rectors have decided upon this date because It will follow the races at Caldwell and bring Baker City In the Idaho circuit. Practically all of the horses that will compete In Idaho will come to Baker City and some of the best races ever held here will be seen at that time. Local people who have horses they wish to enter should be getting them In readiness for the meet. Local people who have fast horses are not being overlooked and the management Is preparing to hang up a good purse for Baker City horses that have never started for public money. The event will be a harness race and should attract a large num ber of entries. The slate gives $1200 each year to Baker county to be awarded as pre miums at the county fair and the di rectors are now making up the premi um list to send to the state printer. Any one who has any special request to make for premiums' should see Mr. Correll at once and If the change Is expedient It will be made. A Clrildren'a Fair. In connection with the district fair to be held In The Dalles, Oregon, next October, 1908, a school children's In dustrlal fair will be held which will be opened only to pupils In the public high and parochial schools of the five counties of the district, namely, Crook, Sherman, Gilliam, Wheeler, and Wasco counties. For this It Is plan ned to provide a separate pavilion and reward the makers of meritorious exhibits with medals, ribbons, and diplomas. These exhibits however, must be entirely the work of the chil dren or young people of the schools, that Is, if flowers or vegetables the must be grown In their own garden and cared for by their own labor, or If needle or mechanical work It must be the fruit of their own labor. The exhibits will be divided into two classes: (1) Those by all children over 12 years of age and (2) those by all children 12 years of age and under. Rowdies IH'Htroy Church. Farmers residing In the vicinity of the Cottonwood Presbyterian church are highly Incensed over the wanton destruction of church property by members of picnic parties and an ef fort will be made to put an end to the depredations, says the Walla Walla Union. A large grove surrounds the church, which Is located east of Walla Walla about seven miles, and parties have ben given use of the grounds for picnics. Residents In that vicinity stated yes- A Flying Car. A car loaded with flour from The Dalles, broke away from the Wasco Warehouse and Milling Co. warehouse about train time Saturday morning and whizzed out of Moro, down grade at the rate of 70 miles an hour as it pased DeMoss springs, says the Moro Observer. The freight train was a short distance ahead of it and bets were easy that there would be some body killed when the runaway caught up with It, which fortunately didn't happen, as the flour car literally flew into the air, a mile behind the train and averted a calamity. Hardly was a scratch made on the ties whefe the cr left the track, and the trucks shot 100 yards ahead of the wreck, which was total. About 200 sacks of flour out of the carload were saved In pas sable condition. 1 Mr. Roosevelt of the Boston Store thinks well enough of the Furnish-Coe lands to invest his money in a tract on the project. Although the project has been on the market but eight weeks, we have sold to date over 30 per cent of the total acreage, the purchasers for' the greater part being men who had first made an inspec tion of irrigation projects in Idaho, Washington and Oregon. The consensus of opinion, of the men who have gone over our lands, has been that we are not asking enough money. ' We are giving every oppor tunity to the people of Umatilla County, to get in on the ground floor, Something is going to happen very soon. A determined warfare on all labor unions, which will have the support of the 3000 members of the National Association Manufacturers, representing an Kjrregate capital of 15 billion dollars, ill soon be commenced. This action as determined upon at today's ses- lon of the asoclatlon at the Waldorf- storla. Political methods will be 'd by the manufacturers In the Kht; which will Inject a new and Ital Issue Into the presidential cam paign. According to President James W. an Clove, themembershlp of the as- orlatlon Is practically unanimous in he matter of fighting the unions. It alleged that of the 30,000,000 labor ers In this country, less than 1,500,000 are affiliated with the American Fed eration of Labor, and that any deter mined stand against what Is termed the "tyranny" of organized Inbor will receive the support of the great ma jority of these unorganized workmen. It Is stated that the association will not attempt to disrupt the unions, but will make Its fight against some of the principles which the unions stand for and which are obnoxious to capital. Among these are the closed shop, the boycott, sympathetic strikes, appren ticeship restrictions and compulsory use of the union label. New York labor leaders are appar c-ntly not alarmed by the proposed warfare of the association and declare that It Is but another outburst of the snlrlt of vain antagonism to unions which has heretofore found feeble ex presslon In citizens' alliances and slm liar bodies.
