Dog wood is indispensable In the manufac ture of hsuttles, bobbins, and spin dles, because it is the only wood which takes a high polish and wears per fectly smooth by friction, under a: ter. The discovery of the adaptability of the Pacific dogwood, however, has not aided the eastern manufacturers, and they have been obliged to look for substitutes nearer home, THe most promising of these are mesquute and tupelo gum. The wood of the mes qulte is heavy and very hard, close grained, and -has a compact struture. It Is probable that It would be em inently adapted for the 'manufacture of shuttle blocks, as it appears to have all the requisite qualities of weight, hardness, and suceptibllity to a hard polish. Already it has proven well fitted for the manufacture of spools and bobbins, for which white birch is now so largely used. The tupelo gum is medium hard and heavy, and has a compact fibrous structure. It has not yet been util ized to much extent in the textile In dustries, though It is quite probable it will play an Important part in the fu ture, since It combines with several necessary qualities the exacting prop erty of wearing smooth by friction. IUPTIST ANNIVERSARY WEEK. Hundred Flocking to Oklaltoma from Alt Parts of the World. Oklahoma City, Okla., May 19. Oklahoma City Is today the Mecca of hundreds of distinguished BaptlBt clergymen, laymen and missionaries, who are flocking to the metropolis of the new state from all over the world to take part In the various conventions which will mark Baptist anniversary week. The formal program will be inaug urated tomorrow with the meeting of the National Women's Baptist Home Mission wcletv, when well known wo men from all parts of the country and from foreign lands will speak. The Northern Paptlst convention will as semble on Thursday, and on Friday the American Baptist Home Mission society will open its seventy-sixth an nual meeting. The American Baptist Publication society, the Baptist For ward Movement for Missionary Edu cation and other denominational or ganizations will also hold sesalons. A special feature of these meetings will be a discussion of the missionary work of the church among the Indians of the southwest and many redskin con verts will be in attendance. Next Sunday the Baptist Young People's Union of America will have special servlcee, at which the work of the society will be discussed by off! clals and members from all over the country.
