The supply of dogwood and per

is nearly exhausted. This statement
will not appear significant to the aver

Bat when he Is told that the entire
supply of shuttles, bobbins and spin

mills in n parts of the cuntry is fur-

EASTEDN FACTORIES
such by-products as pyrologneoui
acid, acetic acid, protacetate of iron,
acetate of lime, methylated spirits,
solvent naphta, wood tar, wood pitch,
and various forms of charcoal. Dog
wood is indispensable In the manufac
ture of hsuttles, bobbins, and spin
dles, because it is the only wood which
takes a high polish and wears per
fectly smooth by friction, under a:
ter.
The discovery of the adaptability of
the Pacific dogwood, however, has not
aided the eastern manufacturers, and
they have been obliged to look for
substitutes nearer home, THe most
promising of these are mesquute and
tupelo gum. The wood of the mes
qulte is heavy and very hard, close
grained, and -has a compact struture.
It Is probable that It would be em
inently adapted for the 'manufacture
of shuttle blocks, as it appears to have
all the requisite qualities of weight,
hardness, and suceptibllity to a hard
polish. Already it has proven well
fitted for the manufacture of spools
and bobbins, for which white birch
is now so largely used.
The tupelo gum is medium hard and
heavy, and has a compact fibrous
structure. It has not yet been util
ized to much extent in the textile In
dustries, though It is quite probable it
will play an Important part in the fu
ture, since It combines with several
necessary qualities the exacting prop
erty of wearing smooth by friction.
