Years ago the deceased became ad dicted to morphine through an acci dent. While a bystander at a fight in Portland he was struck upon the head by a policeman and a trepan ning operation was necessary to save his life. He was given morphine by the surge-on and It Is said became a i'tlm to the drug habit without knowing what he was using. C Koeppen A Bros. Ben Gifford. the well-known photo grapher of The Dalles and they have been on exhibit here today. One of Mr. Gifford's views Is of the cltv of Pendleton and it shows the town from above the hospital to the extreme lower edge of the city. Tne view is 70 by 16 inches and the detail Is strikingly clear. The other view shows the Presby terian church on the reservation, surrounded by tepees erected there during the revival meeting that Is now on. This picture Is large and Is one of the most lifelike things ever taken In the photograph line. The photographs were taken by Mr. Gifford with a monster panoramic camera he secured not long ago and the pictures displayed are Just as taken by the machine, there being no enlargement. For some time past Mr. Gifford has been In the service of the O. R. & N. company and his pictures are used for advertising purposes all over the country. It Is likely that the two views taken here will be used for that purpose. REMAINS OF WILLIAM BRANDT LAID TO REST. to Many Friend Pay Last Respects Unfortunate. At 3 o'clock this afternoon the fu neral of William Brandt was held from the Baker & Folsom parlors and a large crowd of friends of the dead man were out to do hl memory hon or. The funeral expenses were paid by the saloonmen of the city and a beautiful casket was secured. The service at the undertaking parlor and also at the cemetery was conducted by Rev. A big union mass meeting will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock In the Methodist church. Mr. J. R. Nodell and Mr. E. C. Morning and evening at the usual hours for service they will also speak In the churches of the city; morning. Baptist and Presbyterian, evening Christian and Methodist. J. X. Scott Is At Work. J. N. Scott, candidate for Joint rep resentative as an Independent; has been in the city today from his home At Athena, in the Interest of his can didacy. While he did not seek to make the race In which he Is now en tered Mr. Scott will make as vigorous a campaign as time will permit and has strong hopes of winning. Me is pledged to statement No. 1. Miss Cronson Leaves. Miss Hazel Crosson, popular elo cution Instructor, leaves tomorrow morning for Salt Lake City, where she will visit with friends for several weeks. At the conclusion of her visit she intends returning to this city to resume her work here, but she has not fully decided upon her plans for the future. Mrs. Sarah Hamilton Dead. Mrs. Sarah Hamilton, wife of Lafe Hamilton flf Warren station, died at their horn near Warren yesterday. Death was due to consumption. The deceased iwas 30 years of age, and the funeral will be held at Helix tomorrow. Dr. Farnsworth Here. Dr. Farnsworth, formerly with Dr. M. S. Having already won from all the ball teams of this aectlun, the Pen dleton team will play the Portland Greys here tomorrow and the fun are looking forwurd to the game with Interest. Though the visiting team is a strong one, the local rooters are now willing to back Lorlmer's stickers against anything that may come down the line and they declare that after the game tomorrow the color of the visiting team will have an autumnal hue. In the game tomorrow Parkes will be In the box for Pendleton, a fact that shows that the team will be out to wlh. Munson, a new man from Alameda, will be behind the bat, while Conrad will again play first Shockley will hold down the second bag, Van Houten, third and Lee will play short stop. In the outfield King will play left, Gray center and Baker right. Collins and Lorlmer will be on the bench. The game tomorrow will commence at 2:30 sharp as it Is necessary for the visiting team to leave for Walla Walla on the evening train. ' Week Day Games. On next Tuesday and Wednesday, La Grande will be here for two more games and other week day games have also been .scheduled. The soldiers from Fort Walla Walla will be here a week from Sunday and an effort will be made to have them here on Saturday also. Later on games will be played with Baker City. According to Manager Lorlmer, a regular league will not likely be formed owing to the failure of Walla Walla to line-up In the same. But nevertheless, many week day games will be scheduled and in reality Vague ball will be played regardless of the failure to organize.
