Once more the Junk shop question Is before the council and If Uie pres ent city ordinance regarding such es tablishments Is amended as suggest ed last night the Webb street peo-. pie will again smell the sweet odors to which they so strenuously object ed some months ago. The proposition of changing the Junk ordinance was taken up at the Instance of Jack Brown, who wishes to reopen his place on West Webb. At present the ordinance bars a Junk shop from being located within 200 feet of any residence property. In order that he may resume business Brown asks that the distance be re duced to 60 feet and last night City Attorney Raley was directed to draft an ordinance making the present one les radical. v IfflJI Levee Repairs Discussed. Resolutions were passed providing for the Improvement by contract of Perkins avenue and other streets on the north side. The work is to be done by contract and many of the property owners submitted bids for their own work. Extend Court Street. The report of the city engineer re garding the extension of Court street, so as to provide a roadway to the dumping grounds, was read and accepted.- Mr. Kimbrell was also given the title of city engineer. The concert to be given by Miss Frances Batchelor and Mrs. Anna Sel kirk Norton tonight will be given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Dick son instead of at the parish house as formerly announced. The change Is made necessary by the fact that no grand piano could be secured for the parish house. A delightful program will be rendered by Miss Batchelor of Portland, and Mrs. Norton. The pro ceeds will be used in the construction of a new rectory for the Church of the Redeemer. Tickets are on sale at the Pendleton Drug store at 75 cents. Pusslon Play Monday Night. A moving picture representation of the Passion play of Oberamergau, will be given at St. Mary's Catholic church on next Monday night. May 4. This Is an excellent reproduction of the fa mous scene at Oberamergau in which the life of Christ is acted by the peasants of that place. St. . Mary's church has secured the pictures and Invites the public to . patronize the event. An admission of 25 cents will be charged. Pastime Change. , The Pastime announces a clever change of moving" pictures for to morrow, which program will continue oyer until Sunday. These are all new, in beautiful colorings and up to date. New pictures and Illustrated songs that have never been shown here be fore. Among the new ones will be "Whose Hat is It." "Shoeing the Mail Carrier," "Seamstresses Romance," "An Inexperienced Cabby," and a new Illustrated song. Eagle Change Today. There Is a change of program at the Eagle Show Shop today, among the new attractions being "All's Fair In Love and War'," "Mr. Near Sight ed Goes a-Sltrimping," "Baby Will Play," and the Illustrated song, "The Stars and Stripes and You, Dear." This will be one of the most attrac tive programs yet seen at this popu lar place. Dime Changes. The Dime will have a change of moving pictures today, among the at tractions being something new that has not been shown here before. The management announces some very clever pictures for the next few weeks. The change tomorrow will continue until Sunday when there will be an excellent change for the big Sunday crowds. More Insurance Men. W. W. Grove, representative of the Hartford, and E. W. Qultzow, repre stntatlve of the Pennsylvania, both well known Insurance men, were here yesterday. They were In the city for the purpose of meeting with J. M. Rentier, their local representative, and today Mr. Grove went to Echo. He will return tonight. Tlio Passion Play. (By A. Pet) La Grande. April 29. The Pendle ton "Pets won from the La Grande Gag Blowers today by a score of 8 to 6. In the first Inning the Pets crossed the plate on a base on balls to Van Huuten, Conrad's sacrifice and outs by Gray, Parkes and Lee. They scored three more In the fifth when O'Brien fumbled Collin's slow grounder and hits by Van Houten, Conrad and a two-bagger by Gray. Nothing more doing for the Pets un til the ninth canto, when Collins flew out to O'Brien, Van Houten hit for two bases, Conrad singled, Gray Jam med out a two bagger, Parkes out from Lodell to Pindy, Lee and Baker both hit for one base, Shockley struck out. In fact all the the Pets played ball from start to finish and practically defeated 10 men, as Umpire Andrews gave the La Grande team the best of base decisions and was very much off color on bails and strikes. Pendleton should feel proud of her 1S08 ball team, as they now have played and won four straight games. All the boys ask of business men Is liberal support and they will win the games. Parkes was at La Grande yesterday upon land business and In the afternoon had the pleasure of witnessing the ball game and of seeing his relative, Parkes, pitch one of his best games. According to the ludge, the game was a fine one but the umpire was partial to La Grande. Smlth-MonitROmory. Sydney J. Smith of Pasco and Miss Jessie Montgomery of Pendle ton were married by Justice of the Peace Parkes at his office this morn ing at It o'clock. J. K. Bott Buys City Property. . J. K. Bott of Helix, has purchased the J. H. Robs dwelling at 211 Lin coln street, on the north side. The deal was consummated yesterday afternoon. C. S. Jackson In New York. The American Publishers' Weekly of New York city says that C. S. Jackson of the Oregon Dally Journal was a visitor at the offices there dur ing the past week. Iliiudcnsrliicld at La Grande. Rev. C. R. Haudenschleld, the evangelist who conducted meetings at the M. E. church in this city during the winter, has Just arrived In La Grande and will begin a protracted meeting there this week. He hus been at Welser for the past month, where he secured 175 additions to the church In a series of meetings. The meet ings at La Grande will be held In the skating rink and all of the churches are Joining In the work. R. & N, was operated upon today for appendicitis by Dr. W. G. Cole at St. Anthony's hospital. She is doing nicely this afternoon and It Is thought will rapid ly recover. Rumors that Governor Hughes will withdraw from the presidential race and ask for re nomination for the governorship of New York are being persistently bruit ed about New York and Washington. Hughes' desire to force through his reform measures Is the principal rea son alleged for the withdrawal. McFulls-Flshcr Nuptials. Sim F.. McFall and Miss Mabel Fisher were married this afternoon by County Judge T. P. GUllland.' The ceremony occurred in the office 'of the county Judge with only the legal number of witnesses present.
