Racing Contest.
It Is but rarely that men of the
Portland Y. M. C. A. have the oppor
tunity of acting as special dispatch
bearers to Governor Chamberlain, but
they will be given that opportunity
next Saturday, May I, the occasion of
the occasion of the annua relay race
between tue Portlond association and
the Chemawa Indians, says the Ore
gon Dally Journal. .
Starting from Salem at 8:30 a. m.,
Governor Chamberlain will hand a
copy of the dispatch to the starting
men for the different contingents. The

There la one establishment In this
city that Is steadily turning- out man
ufactured products In spite of the
criticism that is made of Pendleton
as a poor factory town. This Is the
Pendleton planing mill, owned by R.
Forster, where sashes, doors, show
cases, counters and other similar fix
tures are being made In large num
ber to fill orders received.
At the above mill a large consign
ment of high grade doors, sashes, etc:,
is now being turned out to fill orders
from Kennewlck and other places In
the Irrigated district of central and
eastern Washington. Numerous or
ders of aslmllar nature have been re
ceived by Mr. Forster In the past and
he says that ot present his outside
business exceeds the local orders.
As a maker of showcases, counters,
etc., Mr. Forster has also earned an
nvlable reputation. He recently
made a complete set of up-to-date
display cases for the Pendleton Drug
Store, and his men are now engaged
In making a modern meat market
display case for. the Tweedy meat
market.
Matlock to Run Perkins Bar,
The lease for the Perkins hotel bar
In the Perkins hotel building, at Fifth
and Washington streets, was sold this
morning to L. L. Matlock of Heppner
for $10,000. The lease Includes the
good will of the former owner, Geo.
Schultz, and runs for five years, say
the Oregon Dally Journal. It Is the
Intention of Matlock to spend $10,-
000 between now and the opening on
May 4 putting the cafe Into shape. It
will be finished In Circassian walnut

though leasing his Perkins cafe, will
not retire, but will continue in the l

ceived an Invitation to attend the
graduating exercises of the medical
department of the University of Or
egon which will be held In Portland
on May 4, and In which a class of 22,
Including Eldred B. Waffle of this
city, wjll graduate. Mr. Waffle Is the
son of the pioneers of this city, Mr.
and Mrs. B. S. Waffle, and has made
excellent progress In passing through
the medical department of the uni
versity. He will conie home for a
visit shortly after the graduation ex
ercises, after which he will take the
position as house physician in St.
Vincent's hospital during the coming
sum mer.

A party of 26 Germans came In this
morning from Kitzville over the
Northern Pacific on their way to
Nampa, Idaho, where they have tak
en a large contract to clean and thin
beets at that place. They have, been
farming at Uitzville for the past six
years, but have found It unsatisfac
tory and will now try the beet dis
tricts for a .few years. The party con
sisted of men. women and children,
all of whom will work In the beet
fields.
