The moat notable Catholic celebration In the history of the church In America, will be held in New York during the week and hue attracted to the city some'of the most eminent prelates of this and other countries. The celebration marks the beginning of the second century of the diocese of New York, which was created in 1808 by Pope Plus VII. Two cardinals will participate In the week's program, Cardinal Logue Archbishop Armagh, In Ireland, the diocese founded by St. Patrick, and Cardinal Gibbons. In addition there will be present Archbishop Irelond; of Bt. Paul; Archlshop Ryan of Phil adelphia; Archbishop Quigley of Chi cago; Archbishop Keane of Dubuque; Archbishop Messmer of Milwaukee; ArchblBhop Rlordan of San Francis co, and many bishops and the apostol ic delegate to this country, the Most Rev. Diomede Falconla. Fir-Mt Ulg Event. The first important event of the week will take place tomorrow morn ing, beginning with a solemn pontifi cal mass in the cathedral. Cardinal Logue, Archbishop of Armagh, will be the celebrant,, and Cardinal Gib bons, Archbishop of Baltimore, the preacher. At 8 p. m. solemn, pontifi cal vespers In the cathedral. Most Key. Diomede Falconlo, D. D., apos tolic delegate, will be the celebrant, and Most Rev. John J. Olennon, D. D. archbishop of St. Louis, the preacher. Wednesday, at 10 a. rri., solemn mass In the cathedral, at which the children from the parochial schools of the diocese will assist and sing the chant of the mass, and will listen to a special sermon, for the occasion. At I p. m. there will be a grand mass meeting of the laity at Carnegie hall. Requiem for Dead. Thursday, at 10 a. m., solemn pon tlflclal mass of requiem In the Cathe dral for the deceased bishops and priests of the diocese. At 8 p. m. a reception will be tendered to the vis iting prelates at the Catholic club. The festival week will close with a parade of the Cuthollc societies on Saturday, at 2 p. m., when 40,000 members of Catholic societies are ex pected to be In the line of march. The first bishop of the New York diocese was the Right Rev. Luke Concunen, who was consecrated on April 24. 1908, and died In 1810. The second head of the diocese was Bish op John Connolly, 1814 to 1826; he was followed by Bishop John Dubois, who presided from 1825 to 1842. In the latter year he was succeeded by Blnhop John Hughes, one of the ablest prelatea the Catholic church In Am erica has produced. Bishop Hughes became the first archbishop on the elevation of the see In 1850, and died In 1864. He, was followed by Cardl nny McCloskey, who was archblhop from 1864 to 1885, and who In turn was succeeded by Archbishop Corrl gan, slnoe whoso death In 1902 Arch blnhop Farley has presided over the diocese. St. Patrick's 'cathedral was begun In 1858 and consecrated In 1879. Dloceso Territory. Geographically, the diocese com prises the Boroughs of Manhattan, the Bronx, and Richmond, the coun ties of Dutchess," Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan. Ulster and West chester, and the Bahama Islands. Its territorial extent Is more than 9000 quare miles. Some History. Vntil 1808, New York was included in the diocese of Baltimore. In 1808 there was In New York city but one church, the Church of St. Peter, standing at Church and Barclay streets, and one parochial school, while the priests numbered but four r five. Today there are 2600 priests in the same ter ritory. In the New York diocese alone there are now 1.200,000 mem bers, 130 churches, and 185 schools, with 65,000 pupils. Society Event Opens Tlila Eventnfc. New York, April 28. Brooklyn's notable spring society event, the six teenth annual horse show of the Brooklyn Riding and Driving club, opens this evening and promises to be more Interesting than ever to lovers of good horses, as well as affording the Brooklyn dames and damsels the opportunity to display their spring finery. Horse centers In various parts of the country are represented among the entries and the show will be much more than a local event. Brooklyn horse owners have many fine animals and In recent shows have been strong competitors for the Man. hattan horsemen. Thirty-nine classes have been pro. vldcd and all are well filled. For harness horses there are 10 classes, with prizes of 50 and $25, for light middle and heavyweights, singles and pairs; ladles' pairs and singles, runs bout horses and best collection of three. Two classes are for tandems, one for park fours for the Loesser cup, and one for road fours. Then there are classes for broughams, with appointments, ponies In harness, maidens and combination horses. In the saddle-horse classes there are 10 classes, of which one Is for register ed horses, one for hest trained horses, and one for five plaited horses Polo ponies will also have- a class, For Jumpers there are four classes, and th Brooklyn Eagle cop for gig horses is up for competition. The win ner will hold the world's amateur title at the 18.2 style of game. The entrants are Luclen De Rolls, representing France; Calvin Demarest and C. F. Conklln, both of the Chi cago A. A.; J. F. Poggenburg, New York, and E. W. Gardner, Passaic, N. J. Experts believe that the real bat tle will be between De Rolle, the champion of the French Amateur Bil liard Federation, and Calvin Demar est, the American national champion. A SQUARE DEAL MOVEMENT TO PROTECT REDS FROM RAPACIOUS Inter-State Conference of Heads of Indian Tribes Now in Session Prominent Educators and Philan- HiropiHtM Meet With Them Land- Grubbers and Politicians to be Guarded Againtrt. Riverside, Cal., April 28. A move. ment to give the Indians of the far west a square deal and to protect them from the rapacity of the land-grabbers and politicians was launched here today at an interstate confer ence of heads of Indian tribes, well known educators and philanthropists. The greatest object of the confer ence, which win continue through three days, is to open the eyes of the Interior department and of the people to the utter Incapability of the In dians to compete in a commercial way with their white neighbors. Dr David Starr Johnson, president of Stanford University, Is one of the lead ers in the movement. It is declared that thousands of western Indians are now landless and homeless, and on the point of starva tion, because of their inability to cope with the unscrupulous whites who have robbed them of their posesslons. It Is admitted that theh effort to ed ucate the Indians to the standards of white men's civilization, while suc cessful In some Individual instances, has been largely a failure and that other methods of conserving the In terests of the native Americans will have to be devised.
