State Conventions, Bunqucts and HlH-cch Muklngs Follow Each Otlicr In Ruiilil Succession Grunt's Birth day to Bo Celebrated by Patriots. Washington, April 25. Next weeK wlll be the busiest since the 1908 cam palKii was opened, if the number of state conventions to be held through out the country affords any criterion. While mpHt of these gatherings may be safely forecasted, as to tholr presi dential preferences, a few surprises are llkoly to develop. While no conventions are schedul ed for Monday, there will be several important meetings and banquets of a political nature in various parts of the country. Grant's birthday will be observed by many patriotic bodies in the large cities of the land. One of the most important of these will be the Grant day dinner In Pittsburg, when Senator P. C. Knox, Pennsyl vania's candidate for the presidency, will deliver the principal address. Sec retary Taft will begin the week in Connecticut, and on Tuesday will go to New Tork, where he will speak be fore the Civic Forum. He hns chosen for his subject on this occasion "The Influence of America on Popular Gov ernment In the World." The Inde pendence leRgue will hold Its second nnnunl banquet in New Tork on Mon day evening, and It is expected that William Randolph Hearst will take ndvantiige of the occasion to announce some of the plans of his new political organization. Republican state conventions, to se lect delegates at large to Chicago, will he held on Tuesday In Arkansas, Co lorado and South Carolina, while re publlcnn primaries will be held In New Jersey and the District of Columbia. Democratic state conventions, at which the Denver delegations will be selected, are to be held on the same day In New Jersey and Connecticut. The Colorado convention will be held In Pueblo, and Is certain to In struct Its delegates for Secretary Taft. While some of the negro voters of Ar kansas are opposed to Taft, It Is al most certain that the Hot ' Spring." convention will also go on record as favoring the war secretary. Similar conditions exist In South Carolina, where most of the white republicans look upon Taft as the logical succes sor of President Roosevelt. The pri maries of New Jersey and the District of Columbia are also likely to be to Taft's advantage In the presidential race. William Jennings Bryan will likely find lively opposition In both of the democratic state conventions to be held on Tuesday, that of New Jersey In Trenton, and of Connecticut In New Haven. A majority of the democratic voters of New Jersey are thought to favor an unlnstructed delegation to Denver. Doth Judge Gray and Gover nor Johnson have many admirers In Jersey, and they will fight any at tempt to pledge the state delegation to to the Nebraskan statesman. In Con necticut, too, there Is considerable opposition to Bryan, which may result Iri an unpledged delegation. Five republican state conventions will be held on Wednesday, that of Pennsylvania at Harrlsburg, Vermont at Burlington, Mississippi at Jackson, West Virginia at Parkersburg and the Davidson faction of Alabama at Bir mingham. Pennsylvania's convention will be notable as marking the formal launching of the presidential boom of Senator Philander C. Knox. Taft will probably receive the Indorsement of the Vermont convention and that of West Virginia'. Mississippi's delega tion will likely be unlnstructed. but favorable to Taft, since the adminis tration forces are apparently In con trol of the situation. The Alabama convention will be- that of the David son, or anti-Roosevelt faction, and will probably support Foraker. The Roos evelt faction In Alabama will hold ft convention later, and there will be contesting delegation from Alabama to the Chicago conventlop. The Maryland republican state con vention will be held In Baltimore on Thursday, and while the delegation may be left unlnstructed, it will doubt less swing Into line for Taft when the roll Is qalled at the national conven tion. The Maine convention, which will be held In Portland on the same day, Is also claimed by the Taft ad herents, although this is denied in other quarters. North Carolina's white republicans are Taft boomers, almost to a man, and the state convention in Greensboro Is expected to take action which will result In a Taft delegation to Chicago. Two Taft delegations will be elected to represent Alaska In the republican national convention, In a territorial convention to be held In Ketchlken next Saturday. Another Important political event scheduled for next Sat urday Is the special democratic prl mnry in Texas, when the principal question to be decided Is whether United States Senator J. W. Bailey will be sent to Denver as one of the representatives of the Lone Star state In the national convention. The antl Ballcy campaign has been carried on with great bitterness, and the result, which will go far toward deciding the political fate of the brilliant Texas senator, Is eagerly awaited In the na tional capital. CATHOLIC CENTENNIAL. Anniversary of Pounding of New Tork Blocene to Bo Celebrated. New York Catholics will tomorrow begin a celebration, to last through next week, of tho centennial anniver sary of the founding of the New York diocese. The real anniversary falls on April 8, but the exercises were post- poned on account of the Lenten sea son. Many famous prelates, Including Cardinal Gibbons, archbishop Logue of Ireland, and Mgr. Dlomode Falco nlo, apostolic delegate to the Unlted States, will participate in the festivi ties, which will culminate next Sat urday with a great parade in which 4 0,000 Catholics are expected to par ticipate, The growth of the church In this diocese has been commensurate with the growth of the city and surround ing country. Tho original diocese, with Us one church, four or five priests and 15,000 members has now been divided Into nine dioceses, that of the city alone having 230 churches and 1,200,000 members; The offlcjal papal bull which estab lished the diocese of New York, to gether with the dioceses of Philadel phia, Boston and Bardstown, was Is sued on April 8, 1808. SANTA RARBARA IS GAY. City Blossom Out In Honor of the Coming of the Fleet. Santa Barbara, Cal., April 25. Santa Barbara blossomed out Into a veritable sea of gay colors this morning, with flags, bunting and flowers lining every Important street and the stars and stripes floating from nearly every building. For this Is the day of days in Santa Barbara marking the arrival of the great ar mada or Daiuesnips inai is nuw steaming' northward throug l the blue waters of the Pacific to the enthusi astic welcome that awaits It here this evening. For many months the preparations for the entertainment of the sailors of the fleet have been going forward and, now that the great day Is at hand, everything Is In reidlnesi for a happy culmination of . the anxious planing and heroic endeavors of past days. A crowd of joyous visitors such as has never before gathered on the streets of this little city is on hand and every passing hour adds to the happy threngs that will give a tu multuous greting to the ships of the mighty fleet when they anchor off Santa Barbara this afternoon. The local committees have spared no expense In making the stay of the officers and sailors here one of the most pleasant of the entire voyage, and between now and next Thursday when the ships will resume the north ward Journey, many thousands of dollars will be expended In providing entertainments for the tars. What Santa Barbara lacks in size. It makes up In enthusiasm, and It Is entirely likely that the sea-fighters will look back upon their visit to Santa Barbara as one of the notable experiences of the long cruise. Dig Parade or Catholics. Philadelphia, April 25. As a cli max to the centennial celebration of the creation of the diocese of Phila delphia, thousands of Kn I grits of Co lumbus held a parade through the streets of the city today. Many of the distinguished prelates who have been here during the week will pro ceed to New York, where a similar centennial celebration will be held by .the Catholics of the metropolis. Memorial Day will be celebrated in Atlanta on Monday by the Ladles Memorial as sociation, when crosses of honor will be conferred upon veterans by the Daughters of the Confederacy. The exercises will also include the decora tion of the graves of dead Confeder ate soldiers and a monster parade, In which veterans, Daughters of the Confederacy and local military com panies will participate.
