Stock company, for $40,000, 321 acres
of finely improved land situated In
the famous Ten-Mile bottom and lo
cated 10 miles from this city, says the
Boise Cnpltal News.
This ranch,. which Is already known
throughout the country as one of the
bent In tho riolso valley. Is Improved
with a fine house, a commodious sta
ble and other necessary buildings, and
Is In a high state of cultivation, every
acre being under ditch, while the
water right Is the very best, consisting
of 100 shares each In tho New York
and Idaho & Iowa canals.
The deal also Included all the crops,
consisting of 95 acres In oats, 40 acres
In wheat, and the balance In meadows
and plowed land, together with a large
number of modern farm Implement,
work horses, cattle, brood mares, fine
hogs and considerable hay In the stack
and grain from last season's threshing.
The Improvement of this large ranch
began five years ago and Mr, Cole has
spent a great many thousand dollars
In fencing, buildings and tilling the
soil, until today It stands as an em
blem of what Irrigation and work will
do In the Gem state, and was picked
out by Mr. Thompson ns one of the
flnet ranches In the northwest forJ
his Imported fancy stork.
Horse Disease Stops Work.
A large crew of men and 180 head
of horses engaged by the Utah Con
struction company excavating canals
on the Payette-Boise project eight
miles from Nam pa, ' was forced to
abandon work temporarily In the lat
ter part of last week and the first of
this owing to the fact that the entire
band of horses were placed under
quarantine for contagious disease
which Is alleged to have developed In
one of tho horses, the animal being
shot by the order of State Veterinary
Surgeon O. E. Noble, says the Boise
Cnpltal News.
Mr. Noble was Informed that the
band of hornes was affected with a
disease and went out to the camp
where he found one of the horses
suffering with some kind of trouble
about his nose. He gave orders to

Philadelphia, April 24. Incoming
trains today arc bringing to Philadel
phia the advance guard of the great
concourse of athletes who will parti
cipate in the 14th annuul relay races
of the University of Pennsylvania, to
be held on Franklin Field tomorrow.
Tomorrow's carnival gives promise
of eclipsing all that have gone before,
and will be doubly Important, inas
much as it will enable followers of
amateur athletics to gain a real line
on the London Olympic possibilities of
the college men.
To promise the beet yet is saying
much, for In the last 10 years the
relay races have been the scene of
more hard, fast and high class racing
than any other set of Bports. All the
best men of the last decade have been
tried out on Franklin Field. All the
great hurdlers from Kranzllen to
Garrells, all the fast sprinters from
Wefers and Duffy to Cartmeil, scorea
of fast quarter-mllcrs, the best mllers,
shot putters, high Jumpers, etc., have
all been seen In competition at these
sports.
Teams or Individual athletes will be
on hand from all sections of the coun
try, and It la more than probable that
some new marks will be reached. This
is almost to be looked for in the pole
vault, the high Jump and the discus.
Forty-nine universities and colle
ges have entered teams in tomorrow's
great tournament. Yale, Harvard,
Princeton and Cornell head the east
ern list, while Michigan. St. Louis
University and Illinois State college
will sond runners'from the west, and
even Carlisle Indiana will be repre
sented. Pennsylvania has entered
teams In all races.
The three races to determine the
college championship of America will
be the features of the carnival. One
race will be for a distance of a mile,
each man to run a quarter mile. The
second race will be a four-mile race,
tach man to run a mile, and the third
race will be a two-mile event, each
man to run a half mile.

horses. It Is expected some action
will be taken to raise the quarantine
so that operations can be resumed.
The Utah Construction company ha
several large crews of r.en and teams
engaged on Irrigation projects In this
state and eastern Oregon, but this Is
the first time that any of the animals
have been quarantined for disease.
Hniigcfl Need Rain.
Jordon valley Is one of the richest
sections of Malheur county, and the
residences on the ranches speak pros
perity on every turn.
The farms are large, well Improved
and show thrift. There Is a natural
hot well here, with very strong me
dicinal properties that is reported to
be one of the best In the country.
The town is located southeast of a
rocky bluff that breaks the dullness
of a level landscape scenery and
makes the place rather picturesque.
There are some nice residences in the
place. It is a dry year, and like the
rest of the country, the stock will
suffer If there la not more rain.
Those ranches that depend on water
from the lakes will be short of crops
this year if rain doe not appear
shortly. This is reported to be the
dryest season we have had for two

Old Coin Waking Up.
The fact that Al Bettlngen has be
come owner of one of those nasty new
J 10 gold pieces has brought to light
numerous old coins. P. S. Plummer
Ik showing a $20 gold piece that had
been minted in 1850 and was in good
condition. This coin like the new $10
did not have' the words "In God We
Trust" stamped on Its face. Then J.
B. Golt pops up with a 60-cent silver
piece that was minted in 1808. This
piece Is the same size as the late
coins and bore only 13 stars, repre
senting the original New England
states. The edges were not milled,
but have what Is supposed to be small
stars around It. Now Is a good
chance for some of the many coin
collectors to show yp with something
In this line and share in the glory.

igan athletes who wll participate In
the relay carnival at the University of
Pennsylvania tomorrow were given a
great send-off by their fellow stu
dents, and there Is every confidence
that the Ann Arbor boys will again
romp home with the four-mile relay
championship. The Wolverines are
stronger than ever this year, and ex
tinct to show their eastern competi
tors a few new tricks in-amateur ath
letics. Michigan, who gave Pennsyl
vania such a hard run for first In the
Inter-colleglates last spring, has for
the last five years made a trip to the
rrlav names, and as many times as
she went east she returned west as
champion in the four-mile relay event
as well as winning places In some of
the other open events.

Sailors Eat Meat.
Los Angeles, April 24. Local firms
which took contracts to supply the
fleet with food supplies are rushed
to the utmost to fill the orders. In
addition to the steam and trolley cars,
wagons are being used to get the ma
terial to the big boats. It is esti
mated that over $200,000 will be left
In this city by the fleet. One con
tract called for 650,000 pounds of
meat.
A case of smallpox was discovered
In the county Jail at Colfax. J. O.
Blunt, who was brought to the jail
the night before from Tekoa, came
down with the disease and was
promptly sent to the Isolation hospit
al at Elberton. The Jail and court
house have been fumigated.
