An inspection of the conditions at the poor farm was made yesterday afternoon by four members of the local ministerial association and since they have been through the Institution the churchmen speak in a most com plimentary' way of the institution. The inspection was made at the In stance of Rev. Storey of the Baptist church, to whom complaints had been made regarding the treatment of some of the poor farm inmates. Yes terday morning the ministers took the matter to County Judge Gllllland and the judge Immediately proposed that nn Investigation be made that afternoon. . . T.i,' Accordingly a party consisting of Messrs. Storey, Qulnney, Meldrum and Lieu.illen. Dsitrict Attorney Phelps, County Judge Gilliiand and Commis sioner Horace Walker and C. J. Fer guson as stenographer, was formed. I P'"m arriving at the poor farm different Inmates were in turn brought before the group and aftr first be ing sworn, were asked numerous questions regarding their general care and treatment. Without exception those questioned all spoke favorably of Superintendent McDIll and said the food given them and their general care was all that could be desired. When the two old men who had previously complained to Mr. Storey, were questioned, they both Insisted that they had no complaints of any consequence. Accordingly the visitors returned to the city fully satisfied with the administration of the poor farm and they now speak in a congratulatory manner of the work done by Joe Mc-Dlir. Counterfeiters Busy In Different Parts of the Country Appear in Oregon. Counterfeiters In several parts of the country have been busy during the winter and recently efforts of their work have Just appeared In the mar ket. Notification of three new spuri ous notes have been received by the treasury department officials In Port land. Ono of them is a $20 gold certifi cate and while It is a good represen tation of the original issue by Vncle Sam. the color is-a little off, the counterfeiter not being particular re garding the ink, the result being that his new bill Is the shade of a nice ripe lemon instead of the orange shade in the genuine bills. This new bill turned up in New York. It is remarkably well done, the counterfeiter having paid partic ular attention to nearly all the minor details except the color. The bill was done by means of photo etched plates, afterward given impressions on two sheets of paper with silk threads between. Another of the recent bills first was discovered In southeastern Missouri and was evidently the work of farmer boys who tired of following the plow and doing chores about the old home stead had decided to get rich quick and Jive with ease without working, fncle Sam xrill attend to the question of meSls ?ua oeas v rju"t if they are caught. This note Is a particularly crude affair of the national bank note of the $10 denomination. It Is also the re sult of photo etched plates and the Ink being rough and carelessly han dled. Dan P. Smythe returned home this morning from Arlington, where he had been for a couple of days on business. Smythe & Son have Just finished shearing 50.000 head of sheep and according to Dan P., the shearing season in northern Gilliam county Is now about over.t Yesterday the Smythes delivered 10,000 head of sheep to Oxman & Blcknell, the sheep being half-blood Llncolns that were contracted for last fall. Captain Car den, formerly commanded a team which acknowledged but one super ior In tho United States and certainly knows how the work should be done. The appreciation of the drill was shown by the praises which his team received. Two Operations Today. An operation was performed today by Dr. W. G. Cole of this city and Dr. E. W. Parker of Pilot Rock on Miss Eva Belts, daughter of Douglas Belts of Pilot Rock. The operation was suc cessful and Miss Belts is doing well this afternoon. Dr. Cole and Dr. Strohccker of Hermlston also operat ed upon a Swedish land seeker of Hermlston this forenoon and removed a gangrenous appendix. . Both oper ations were performed at St. An thony's hospital. Dr. N. G. Dlulock Hero. Dr. N. Q. Blalock and daughter of Walla Walla, passed through the city today on their way to Arlington, where Dr. Blalock will recuperate after a severe Jllness which has kept him In 'his room for several weeks. ",11m'' Washington In Town. "Jim" Washington, the well known colored man formerly of this city Is here for a short stay after an ab sence of several years. He was com mitted to the asylum for the Insane from this county a few years ago, but has entirely recovered and is In good health again. Washington was a leading local gamber several years ago and Is well known to all the pioneers. Here From Kenncwlck. J. C. Creswcll, formerly of Free water, but for the past three years a resident of Kennewlck, Is In the city today on a business trip. He will go to Freewater tonight to visit a daugh ter, Mrs. Mary A. Slmard, for a few days after which he will go to Spo kane to visit -another daughter. He says that a second ditch Is being pro jected to cover about 15,000 acres rear Kennewlck. I'niiitilhi Teachers Reelected. At an advance of $5 per month each, both the school teachers at Umatlla have been reemployed for another year. W. M. Musselman, principal, will henceforth draw a sal ary of $85 per month, while Carrie W. Burnham, the second teacher, will recelVe $75 per month. Ballard were united In marriage this morning by Rev. W. L. Van Nuys, pastor of the Presbyterian church. The ceremony occurred at tho Pres byterian mil rise and was a quiet af fair. The groom is a resident of Her mlston and Is now the city recorder of that place.
