Tho county commissioners passed an ordinance recently, prohibiting all automobiles from traveling the river grade out north of town, says the Ilolse Capital News. Thin was done becauso of the fear that some acci dent might occur by teams becoming frightened by the automobiles. All automobiles will bo obliged to go by tho hill road. Some trouble occurred on the grado Suturday, when Mr. Baxter of noise was driving his machine over the grade and met Henry Cox', who was driving a team. The team would not pass the auto and Mr. Cox Insist ed that Mr. Baxter should return and drive his machine over the hill road or he, Mr. Cox, would report him to the county commissioners. It seems that Mr. Baxter did not comply with Mr. Cox's request and was reported by tho latter gentleman to the com mlssloners. What the outcome will be had not been learned. Law Sometimes Wlnkrt. That tho law Is inclined to wink at fraudulent statements made to fur ther commercial transactions was re marked by Judge Preble In the su perior court this morning, say the Yakima Republic. "The law appears to appreciate sharp wits In ' commercial dealings," said the judge, "and numerous de cisions In regard to statements made to further such dealing show that a certain amount of lying Is permissible. In the case of a deal between two par ties In which correct Information can be acquired by both and one accepts 'is true the statements of another, even If those statements are fraudu lent, that does not necesasrlly Invali date the transaction." Working the Ilupriaff. John G. Cleary, one of the princi pal owners of the Dorothy Flagstaff njne. arrived In tho city yesterday from his home at Ronton and Is bus ily engaged In getting things In shape to begin work at the mine, says the Maker City Herald. Men are at the mine now getting the cyanide plant ready to make a test and as soon as things can be gotten In shape work will be resumed underground and the property developed further. There Is considerable ore on tho dump and men were working to cross cut other veins when the mine closed because of the coal shortage. The droughty conditions were relieved by moderate ly heavy rains In. the western and northern counties and by local show ers that were heavy In place in the southern counties. .The temperature averaged above normal, with the open ing and closing days of the week rel atively cool. Mild weather prevail ed, with gentle westerly winds. The rainfall on Friday nnd Saturday was very beneficial. The snow Is disap pearing rapidly from high elevations. Mikkaln, Gilliam county, J. F. Chandler. The fore part of the week v. as fine, the cloudiness gradually In creased. On Wednesday a light rain occurred. Hennlston, Umatilla county, C. W. Kellogg. Clear skies prevailed dur ing the fore part of the week, but the latter part was cloudy. Light rains occurred on Wednesday nnd Thurs day. Pendleton, Umatilla county, H. F. Johnson. The days were warm and the temperatures during the nights were well above freezing. The first rain for the month fell on Wednes day, which was followed' by a heavy shower on Thursday. Weston, Umatilla county, Maud M. Baker. Mild days, with chilly nights. have prevailed, though for the first two days tho weather was like early summer. The Moscow Post publishes the following showing the status ot the work on the Spokane ft Inland. "Tracklaylng on the Moscow exten sion of the Spokane & Inland was commenced several days ago with 100 men on tho Job. The track Is al ready laid past the RIngo farm, three miles south of PalouBe, and will be completed to Viola by the 20th. This side of Viola there are several large cuts to be finished and track laying will be held up for some time. The men will be kept busy, however, bal lasting the road at the other end of the line and putting it In shape for traffic. To Beautify Cemetery. A movement to materially Improve Tuhoma cemetery has been started In North Yakima by the different wo men's clubs of the city, says the Re public. When the city council meets tonight it will consider the feasibility of passing a resolution giving the la des of the city power to go ahead, on their own Initiative, with the work outlined by them relative to making Tahoma cemetery one of tho beauty spots of the valley.
