During the part week a general ex
odus of the Russian population of
Walla Walla was noticeable, says the
Walla Walla Union. In two days the
O. R. & X. ticket agent sold 61
transportation fares to Russians leav
ing the Garden city. The destination
of the emigrants is the sugar fields
near La Grande, Oregon, where they
will work the large beet farms of that
section by contract.
Nearly every one of the Russians
moved, bag and baggage and all sorts
of furniture and household articles
could be observed among the ship
ments made by them. Having con
tracted for work in the beet fields
through an employment agency, which
furnished tickets for them, every one
of the Russians and a Job waiting
when the destination waa reached.
The concerted action of the Rus
sian population of Walla Walla in
moving to new fields is characteristic
of the people. Like the Chinese and
Japanese they go in bunches, large
and small, and constitute a town of
themselves.

meetings having been arranged by
patriotic societies in nearly all cities
and towns. Business is generally sus
pended and all banks and public of
fices are closed, as this Is a legal
holiday In Texas.
San Jacinto day commemorates the
victory of General Sam Houston and
his army of 750 men over the main
division of the Mexican army, 1S00
strong, on the banks of the San Ja
cinto river, April 21. 1836. This bat
tle was the last blow In the battle for
the freedom of the Texas republic. The
Americans rushed Into battle shout
ing: "Remember the Alamo!" and
hurled themselves against the stronger
Mexican ranks with fury that was ir
resistible. In less than an hour the
Mexicans were utterly routed; 630 of
them being slain and 730 more cap
tured. Santa Ana was taken prison
er and Houston had difficulty In re
straining the victors from tearing the
barharous general to pieces.

elaborate celebration of San Jacinto
day this evening.

Preparations for the Whitman Con
servatory of Music northwest musical
contest which is to be held here this
week are almost completed. There
will be about 40 contestants in all
the greater number .being In piano,
with a large number In voice as well
and about a half dozen In violin.
This will easily be the largest mu
sical contest of any sort ever held in
the northwest and will be unique in
the musical history of Walla Walla.
Contestants will be present from all
parts of Oregon, Washington and
Maho, to try for the valuable prizes
which are offered. These consist of
a full scholarship for one year, In
cluding board, room, tuition, and oth
er expenses, In each department of
the contest.
It will afford an unusual opportuni
ty to the discriminating musicians of
Walla Walla to hear the best pupils
of the best teachers In the northwest
and to compare the efficiency and
technique of their work. Walla Wal

The three leading electrical manu
facturers of this country consumed
141,000,000 pounds of copper during
the fiscal year Just 61osed a de
crease of 9.000.000 pounds for the
year 1906-7. Of this enormous figure
the General Electric company con
sumed the most of the metal or 65,
000,000 pounds. The Western Elec
tric came second with the consump
tion of 48,000,000 pounds.

this morning. " After the transaction
of preliminary business adjournment

tween the Taft supporters and the
faction seeking an unlnstructed dele
gation to Chicago.
The ouestlon of county division Is
about to be threshed out again In
Wallowa county. It is not believed,
however, that the discussion will re
sult In any action this year.

Oregon City, April 18. The old
homo of Dr. John McLoughlln. where
tho founder of Oregon City and the
futher of Oregon entertained scores
of distinguished guests in the pioneer
days of the Oregon territory, Is to es
cape destruction and a plan was plac
ed on foot today to preserve the his
toric structure.
The ground on which the houso
stands was sold this week by Mrs.
J. I Harlow and Captain J. T. Ap
person for $6000 to the Haw ley Pulp
and Paper company, which Intends
to utilize the ground for an auxiliary
manufacturing plant. Upon hearing
of the transfer of the property, Mayor
Carll Immediately communicated to
W. P. Hawley, president and general
manager of tho company, his desire
to save the house, which is old and
useless from a business point of view,
and Mr. Hawley very graciously of
ffred to give the building to the city.
Fund to Bo Raised.
Early next week Mayor Carll will
call a meeting of the city officials
and Interest peoplp and endeavor to
raise a fund of a few hundred dol
lars which will be used to move the
tuildlng to city property adjoining Its
present location and fit up the ol 1
hciuse for a free reading room and a
rest room for visitors. This plan will
unquestionably have enthusiastic ap
proval, for there Is no place of this
kind in Oregon City.
Two years ago the owners of tho
property offered to sell the building
and grounds to the city and the pro
ject was fathered by E. G. Cnufield.
who was mayor at that time, but on
a referendum vote the proposition
v. as defeated, as the city was In debt
nnd the majority of the voters con
sidered It unwise to add another bur
den to its finances. The new scheme
however, will cost Oregon Cltv noth
ing, and there Is no question of its
success.
The McLoughlln houso has long
been a familiar landmark here, and
the building was so stoutly construct
ed that the ravages of time have left
it in fair condition.

Diphtheria (it Inline Asylum.
Three cases of diphtheria have
been discovered In the Oregon state
insane, asylum in this city, says the
Salem Statesman. The afflicted ones
are all children nnd the authorities
suspect that the disease was brought
to the institution by a child sent up
some days ago from Multnomah
county. As soon as the disease de
veloped the afflicted children were
promptly isolated, the ward quaran
tined and an Immunizing process
used. Anti-toxin has been sent for
and the treatment will be used for
the three cases. There Is not much
danger of nn epidemic, according to
the physicians nt the asylum, as
everything possible has ben done to
control the disease.
Boy Killed i Salem.
Kirk Barr, a 18-year-old boy,
whose parents reside at Turner, was
run over and Instantly killed bv the
Cottage Grove local at the Southern
Pacific passenger depot about 9:30
last evening, says the Salem States
man. The boy was trying to board
the train while t was in motion, lost
his hold and fell under the wheels.
The body was badly mangled and the
noaa almost severed from the body.
