The following comprehensive re view of the Salt river government ir rigation project, the first and largest of the government schemes, is from a government report and gives Many in teresting details: First among the many irrigation schemes planned by the government reclamation service is the Salt river project at Roosevelt, Ariz., where the largest reservoir In the world is being finished, says the report. This stor age dam Is 276 feet high and will Im pound. 1, '34,000 acre-feet of water, creating a reservoir having an area of 16,3''0 acres or 25.6 square miles. This structure will be completed In 1909 and wll regulate the supply of water in the Salt river. Forty mile? belo-.v the dam the water Is to be de livered by means of a low dam Into the mains of a By-stem of canals, one on each Bide of the river, and water ing about 160,000 acres of land In the vicinity of Phoenix and Mesa. When the Roosevelt dam Is com pleted several thousand electric horse power will be developed and utilized to pump additional water from under ground sources. A power canal 18.5 miles long, having a capacity of 220 cubic feet a second, has already been constructed and Is now being used to develop 4 400 electrical horse-power which i utilize?) In the work of con struction. The lands under this projpet situ ated in the Salt river valley, surround Phoenix, the capital of the territory. This valley has a length east and west of about 40 miles and a width varying from 15 to 30 miles. The soil Is an alluvial deposit of great fertility and adapted to the cultivation of a wld" variety of crops. Including those of the temperate and subtropical zones. A tunnel about nho fet long ha been driven through the side walls of the canyon at the dsm. Tr this tun nel will be placed six gates to be used for sluicing purpose- nn1 for regu lating the floiv of water In the canals in .alt river valley, about 50 miles helor. Then gates, with thel roperallng mei hanlsrn. w ill weigh nearly 800.000 pounds and will he the largest ever eotaalructed to operate under the great pressure of 100 pounds per square Inch. The pressure on each gate Is about 800,000 pounds. With the res ervoir full the gates are capable of discharging 10.000 cubic feet per sec ond. To carry the water from the power canal to tho electrical power house an incline penstock tunnel 620 feet long has been driven. The available head of 220 feet, when discharged through turbine water wheels direct connected to electric generators, will give sever al thousand electrical horse-power which will be transmitted 60 miles away to drive the centrifugal pumps. It Is estimated that each horse power so developed will pump water enough to Irrigate 10 acres of land. The entire electrical apparatus for Jhls work was furnished by the Gen eral Electric company. For those who cannot visit the scenes of operation It Is difficult, In deed, to gasp the magnitude of this undertaking being carried on by the government for the benefit of the peo pie. There will be more than 600 miles of main canals for distributing the water and at the lowest waterfall on record the flood contained In tho reservoir wll Ibe sufflclen' to water the crops over an area of 312 square miles for two and one-half years. The work was started three years ago and will cost about $8,000,000. nil of which is advanced by the gov ernment without Interest. This amount wll be eventually repaid by the farmers whose lands are bene fited. The Income which will accrue from the sale of electric power will also be applied to the cost and when the outlay has been repald.to the gov ernment the farmers wll own the plant and share the expenses pro rata. This storage water will make the des ert, formerly supporting only cacti and other hardy plants, blossom as the rose. AMUSEMENTS Report on Kgyptlau Cotton. Boston, April 17. For many years attempts have been made to introduce Egyptian cotton Into his country, but the climate of the South Atlantic and Oulf states was found Unsuitable for Its culture. Recent trials in New Mexico and Arizona have been highly successful and It Is likely that the Industry will become firmly established In those territories. There Is every Indication that the new musical piece, "The District Leader," which Is to be presented at the Oregon on April 21, will be wel comed by Pendleton theater goers. The news of its success In the east has evidently preceded It. "The Dis trict Leader" is the brightest and most entertaining musical comedy that has j been seen nere in a long time, ana one of the reasons for the great suc cess of the piece was that Mr. Howard gave it a plot that ha3 substance to It. In fact, the story Is one that holds the interest and attention of the audi ence throughout. It tells of the fight for a senatorshlp In New York, with dependent love stories. The comedy Is In three acts,- the first scene showing the lobby of the Hoffman house, the second a street In the Chinese section of New York, and last, a beautiful mansion on Riverside drive. Miss Ethel Dovey has the role of Flossie Whittle, a New Jersey inno cent, and she plays the part most ad mirably. There is probably no better exponent of child's parts on the stage than Miss Dovey. Her song hits, "A Heart to Let," "The Same Old Story," ' Won't You Re My Olrlle," were ren dered with charming effect. "What's the Use of Dreaming" was one of the best liked of the evening. In fact, all the songs, which are composed by the author-actor, were bright and catchy, and a number of the tunes were whistled by the gal lery gods, an Infallible sign of a hit. The supporting company In "The District Leader" nre 12 principals and a chorus of 38. A feature with any musical comedy of the present day la Its chorus, and "The District Leader" It Is said will be found as attrac tive a group of girls as have been got ten together In some time. The piece Is handsomely staged and "The Dis trict Leader's" engagement here promises to be as big a success as In the other cities visited. Death Wag On Ilia Heels. Jesse P. Morris of Skippers.
