Echo, April 16. The rain was of groat benefit In this section of the county. This country is considerably advanced over some sections of Uma tilla county. All sorts of crops never looked better at this season. IMmary Tomorrow. Much interest is being taken In the primaries tomorrow, and Echo will do all in her power to royally en tertain the votehs from Hermiston, who will come in on a special for this occasion. Dr. H. W. Coe, who is Interested in the Furnish lands at this place, was here yesterday looking over the pro ject tn company with friends from Portland. The doctor has much faith in this section of Cmatllla county, and says that great developments will be made in the next year. He was pleas ed, indeed, when he saw the crops getting along so well, and especially when he realized that there would be strawberries early In May. Mrs. L. A. Esteb, who has been kuite ill for several days, is improv ing. A number of cabins are being erected on homesteads in this vicin ity at this time, and many Echo peo ple have arranged to locate on lands in this vicinity. Weston, April 16 Wm. Gould, one of the well known residents of this section, died Tuesday night, after an illness of several weeks resulting from an attack of paralysis. He was near ly Tl years of age, and his death was not unexpected. The funeral was held yesterday and was largely at tended. Mrs. Maud Scott, daughter of. M. J. Cockerllne, submitted to an oper ation yesterday at the Walla Walla hospital. Her home Is in Condon, Oregon. The prohibition rally which was conducted ut the Weston normal Tuesday evening, by L. C. Brown, traveling organizer of school asso ciations for the temperance cause, was listened to by an enthusiastic crowd and was much enjoyed. Domestic Science. The Domestic Science class served a fine banquet Tuesday evening at the normal, to which the investigat ing committee of the school and Bishop Paddock were Invited. The young ladles received many compli ments on their cooking. The Right Reverend Bishop Pad dock left last evening for Pendleton after spending a fewv days in Weston. He preached several times while here and made a host of friends In the normal town. The bishop says he Is delighted with this section of the west. Wm. Oerking is quite seriously ill. He has been here for some time from Connell, Washington. The farmers in the Weston coun try wore a broad smile to see the rain of yesterday, and they expect a great deal more during the month of April, which will insure good crops. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. P. En quire this offlo, Railroad Commissioner Making Many Friends ALL THE CANDIDATES for the commission have visited our t city. The real live one seems to be Mr. Whiting. In com mercial circles Mr. Whiting is no stranger, as'ho is in busi ness in the city of Portland, his candidacy came abouf largely through the commercial interests there, who desired that a business man and a man who was in sympathy and knew the needs of the commercial world be selected for this important position. Mr. Whiting is in no sense of the word a politician, but purely a business man. He is entirely free and independent of all railroad companies or railroad influences and all trasnportation or other corporation, and if nominated and elected will see that the rights and interests of the peo ple are properly protected from any unjust burdens and enactions of railroad companies, and will do what is right and just to all parties concerned. Being an active business man, his years of experience will be especially helpful to him if elected. Mr. Whiting is a pleasant gentleman trmeet, and if chosen the people will find him always willing to lend a helping hand toward se curing justice. H. M. One matter which, it Is understood, has been a topic of discussion by the state board of control of the peniten tiary at their meeting this week, has been the naming of the prison, says the Walla Walla Statesmnn. Heretofore there has been no spe cial name for the -designation of the penitentiary, other than the Washing ton state penitentiary. It is thought by many that it would be well to have some special name for the prison, such as, for Instance, Sing Sing or San Quentln a name which would at once designate the place and be dis tinctive. None of the suggestions have been given out concerning the proposed name, but with Its situation on the hill, It would be easy to give It a title.
