Ho semen of North Yakima, hav lng disposed of their parade of fancy bred animals, are now turning their attention to the mid-summer race meet scheduled at the state fair grounds for the week of June 29 July 4, says the Yakima Republic. This meet will Include contests la which .the local owners may settle the rivalry which has long existed as to the merits of their horses, both saddle and harness. The meet will be divided so as to provide thre days for the runners and three days for the harness horses and a dispensation has been secured from the association which governs harness racing under which the anmlmals may be raced here In a meet of the kind scheduled without taking a record. This will bring a number of the locally owned horses to the front which would not otherwise be competitors. Will Make Market Day a Success. The market day and horse show takes placo In La Grande Saturday, April 18, as heretofore announced, says the La Grande Star. The busi ness men of this city have taken the matter In hand and there la a united purpose to make it a success. Mar tin Larsen has been engaged to offi ciate as auctioneer. Any and every body who has anything to sell should take advantage of this occasion. There Is going to be a crowd of peo ple and the object Is to make market day a proposition of benefit to every body. It can be done as well here as elsewhere. Gypsum Mine on Snake River. . Major J. H. Aitklns, the Hunting ton banker and president of the Northwestern Gypsum company, re cently incorporated by John P. Har mon, a large stockholder in the com pany, arrived in tne city yesterday from Huntington, and during the day met with Attorney John L. Land In his law office and perfected all the details of a permanent organization. Mr. Rand is the owner of one-fifth of the stok of the company, says the Baker City Democrat. The company is hlready heavily fi nanced by Michigan capital and ar rangements are now under way to equip the company's property with an adequate reduction plant. 'Phones: Office, main 114; residence, main 176. Yakima's First Settler Dead. Charles Armenlus Splawn, who was with F. M. Thorp, the first settler In the Yakima valley, and who was the first settler with a family In the Kit titas valley, died Thursday at his home at Thorp, aged 78 years, says the Yakima Republic. At his bed side were hir. brother, A. J. Splawn of this city, L. L. Thorp and several other life-long friends. The body was Interred at Thorp Friday. Mr. Splawn was the first sheriff of Yakl ma who actually served the office, he wax also assessor, county cotnmlsslon and probate judge in the early date of this county. Min nesota's republican state convention will meet In Minneapolis tomorrow, to select delegates at large to the Chi cago convention. It Is considered cer tain that the convention will Indorse tho administration of - President Roosevelt and Instruct the delegates at large to support the presidential candidacy of Secretary Taft. Many delegates to tomorrow's meeting ar rived in the city today, and all are ap parently unanimous In their zeal for Taft. The convention to choose a state ticket will be held on July 1 at St. Paul.
