First unci Second Congressional Dis tricts and (Mate Conventions to Meet List of Delegates From t lie State Will Bo 239 Method of Selecting Delegates Will Be Left to County Central (Tommittcc. Portland Is the place and May 14 the date selected for holding the re publican state convention, the con vention of the first congressional dis trict, says the Portland Telegram. This was decided by the republican state central committee yesterday afternoon. Aside from selecting the place and time for the convention, the committee took little action, although in effort, as predicted, was made to spring Taft resolutions, but these were Idetracked. i Salem made a bid for the state con. ventlon, speaking through State Sen ator J. N. Smith, who held a proxy form F. P. Light. Portland was con sidered tho best place for the meeting. however, and even the convention for the first district was brought here on motion of ex-Senator A. C. Marstens, if Ilosehurg, although Portland Is not In that district. When the state convention meets It will select four presidential electors and four delegates to the national convention. Tho two congressional conventions will each select two dele gates to the national convention, giv ing Oregon eight delegates. The com mittee based the representation on one delegate-at-Iarge for each coun ty nnd one delegate for every 250 votes, or major fraction thereof, cast for Supreme Judge In June. 190. The method of selecting the dele gates Is left to the county central committee. There were several meth ods suggested, but It finally resolved Itself Into leaving the matter to the respective county committees. As there are counties In which there are few candidates for precinct men, the county committees will not be representative of the party. This point whs raised and the central com mittee concluded that inder the cir cumstances republicans should write In the name of some candidate In precincts where no one has filed. By this system the county committees will be representative. W. W. Banks, of Multnomah, had a resolution indorsing Taft. but this was riot met with favor and a substi tute, Indorsing the Roosevelt policies was tabled. While many of the com mitteemen are In favor of Taft. they were opposed to the committee doing anything which might be construed as an attempt to Influence the con vention.. piMirtloiiiucnt of DefcvatM. TOUR OF THE FARMERS' TRAIN Schedule Is Arranged for Eastern Washington, The schedule for the demonstration train over the O. R. & N. lines In southeastern Washington Is complet ed, and Professor Elliott of the State college, who with it. B. Miller, gen eral freight agent of the road, has the matter in charge and Is complet ing arrangements as to equipment and lecture corps, says a Pullman Item. The train will be equipped to dem onstrate the folly of summer fal lowing and the advantages of raising a crop on the lands which would oth erwise be summer fallowed. Profes sor Thatcher, the station chemist, will give Instructions as to varieties of wheat to raise In various soils. Prog. C. W. Lawrence, cereallst, will give talks on the various grains and what varieties are best for certain sections. The train probably will be equip ped in a general way, as was the "wheat demonstration train" In March, but there will be a number of additions and the work will be along broader lines. The train will leave Pullman Mon day morning. May 6, on the ' passen ger train, which takes It to Colfnx, where it will be attached to the Pen dleton train and taken to Starbuck, the first stop. Here it will be picked KING OF THROAT AND LUNG SB up by an engine and run as I special, The first stop will only be for dln- neh, Monday, and the train. will leave at 12:30 and run through to Pomerop. A short stop will be made at Chard, and the train will proceed to Starbuck, arriving at 7 o'clock and a night meeting will be held there. Tuesday, May 6. Train leaves Starbuck, reaching Alto at 8:30 and remaining 30 minutes Arrives at Dayton at 10:15 and remains two hours and 15 minutes, which will in clude time for lunch. Arriving at Huntsvllle at 12:50, one hour will be spent and the train will proceed to Waltsburg, arriving at 2 o'clock and remaining two hours. Prescott will be reached at 4:30 and one hour spent there. Walla Walla will be reached at 6:25, where a night meeting will be held. The New Pure Food and Drag Law. Aside from the disagreeable feat ures there is some anxiety as to the damage done wheat that had been recently sown on loose, dry land, as much of t may be out of the ground entirely when the storm is over, and much moisture Is taken out of the soli by the high wind. Another man from Pullman says Last Friday was one of the most dis agreeable days the Palouse country has known In a long time and Satur day was but little better. A duststorm raged all the first day and It was dif ficult to see when out In the wind. Toward evening it turned colder and Saturday night was quite cold. Geographers t Meet, Berlin, April 14. Official an nouncement was made today that tho ninth International Geographical Con gress, which Includes In its member ship all the leading geographers of the world, will he held In Geneva. Swit zerland, from July 2" to August 6 next. The last convention was held In the United States and this will be Mho first session In Europe since that in Berlin In 1899. The Duke of the Ahruzzl. who Is reported to bo en gaged to wed Miss Elkins. Is a mem ber of the congress and has been In vited to deliver an address. Fight Again mft. Worcester, Mass., April 14. A fight between the Taft adherents and those who favor an unpledged delegation developed today In the third district republican convention. The Taft men favor the election of Harry W. God dard of this city, and Frank Hartley of Webster, as national delegates, while the antl-Taft forces are led by Colonel Samuel E. Wlnslow of Wor cester, and Harry H. Whiting, of Whltlngsville.
