Milton. April 10. The three days'
aessidn of the Ministerial and Lay as
sociation of the Walla Walla district
Of the M. E. church came to a close
lat night. Ministers from different
part. of the district were here, and
altogether the meetings were very
luccessful.
The circuit court which was in ses
sion here for some days, on the big
water suit, has adjaurned until after
the circuit court in Pendleton, which
begins next week.
Attorney C. T. Godwin has gone to
Albany where he will appear in the
Interest of a client in a divorce suit.
H. M. Cocltburn is moving his resi
dence from Its present location to
make room for a new and modern
dwelling.
Dr. H. E. McQuarry has purchased
from T. L. Childer three lots in
Wright's addition, on which he ex
pects to erect a neat cottage in the
Bear future.
Charles Norman has sold to X. W.
Briltan three and one-half acres of
land near the O. R. & X. company
tracts for a consideration of $3350.
Mrs. L. Roumlne has sold her
property near the Peacock mill race
consisting of five acres, for J3000 to
Prank M. Shields. The land is most
ly planted in orchard.
Peach Trees Blooming.
Peach trees are in full bloom in
this vicinity and cherry trees are be
ginning to bloom. Indications are for
a bumper frlult crop this year.

Hon. H. M. Cake tof Portland ad
dressed the people of this end of
Umatilla county Tuesday evening. Hit
lecture was enjoyed very much, and
was largely attended.
A number of the different candi
dates are coming in and out of here
daily, and considerable interest is be
ing taken in politics at this time.
A mass meeting was held at Ingle
Chanel Tuesdav evenine to consider
the proposition of erecting a hall in

for lectures, debating societies, enter
tainments, etc. The building will
probably be erected In a very 'short
time.

Freewater, April 10. Rev. Roy
Hadley preached his farewell ser
mon Sunday at the Presbyterian
church. A new minister is expected
to take his place.

The Ladies' Home Missionary so
ciety met at the home of Mrs. Mltch-
ell this afternoon.
The cool nights have not injured
the fruit in this section of the coun
ty. Rev. Rogers of Weston, has been
holding revival services here. He is
making an effort to organize a Bap
tist church here.

had. up to last night, distributed all
but about 80.000 of the 250.000 mail
ing Inserts which contain a tabloid
program of the most Important events
of the festivities during the June
celebration, says the Oregonlan. One
firm has. within the past week, sent
out more than 8000 of these adver
tising leaflets, all of them going Into
eastern territory, while one of the
local hotels, through an arrangement
with the national organization with
which all leading hostelrles are asso
ciated, has dispatched not less than
15,000 of the Inserts. These will
within the next few days find place
among the exploitation literature
which the more Important hotels of
the east carry about Pacific coast
cities, which offer attractions to sum
mer season tourists.

Candidates Thick In Field.
Hermlston, April 10. Much activ
ity is being shown In and around Her
mlston at this time. Lands are not
only selling, but lands are being im
proved. Hundreds of acres of new
land will produce crops this season.
This year will show a boom in build
ing and all sorts of improvements are
going on in the irrigated district at
this time.
Hundreds of tushels of potatoes
have been planted, many hundred
trees have been set out, and shgrtly
a number of new cottages will be un
der course of construction in all parts
of town. Hermlston is on the up
ward road, and in another year there
will be a wonderful growth in this
section of the county.
A number of tracts of land have
been sold to different people who
have come In to Investigate condi
tions in the last couple of weeks.
Work Goes On.
Very satisfactory progress Is being
made on all parts of the Umatilla
project, according to the present re
port of the officials. On May 27 it Is
expected that all the distribution sys
tem will be In readiness to receive
water and that It will be turned In on
practically all the lands declared
open to settlement this year. This Is
the date when excursions will be run
from Pendleton and different points.
Instltnte Tomorrow.
A teachers' Institute will be held
in Hermlston tomorrow for the teach
ers In the west end of the county. A
very Interesting and Instructive pro
gram has been arranged for this oc
casion, and it promises to be a most
successful event.
Numerous candidates have been
here of late, and politics seem to be
the main topic of conversation. Ir
rigation has taken second place until
after election, at least.
The time Is drawing near when all
voters from here will be required to
go to Echo for the primary election,
April 17.
Ji MANY FRUIT TREES.
Tomorrow Will Be Clean-up Day In
Pilot Rock.
Pilot Rock, April 10. Many acres
of land have been planted to fruit
trees In the past few weeks In this vi
cinity. Many of the farmers are tak
ing an Interest In making this one of
the best fruitgrowing sections of east
ern Oregon. Many berries have also
been set out In various places, and all
are working together to bring out the
best there Is In the country.
Considerable land has been sold
near here of late to parties who ex
pect to locate here.
A great deal of Interest is being
taken In the erection of a hotel for
Pilot Rock. The subscription Is being
Increased, and It Is thought that a
subscription of $6000 for this pur
pose can easily be raised.
Clean Up Tomorrow.
The city council has designated to
morrow as a clean-up day for the
town, and It Is thought that the town
wl'l le thoroughly clean after this
date.

Iowa state university at Iowa City,
Iowa, from which school he graduat
ed with the degree of bachelor of
laws on June 30. 1874, and was ad
mitted to the bar of the supreme
court of Iowa.
He began the practice of law in
his old childhood home, Panora,
Iowa. In 1876 he removed to Harris
burg. Iowa, and there continued In
the practice of law except for one
year, during which time he was en
gaged in the newspaper business as
editor of the Harrisburg Republican
until March, 1883, when he came to
the coast, taking up his residence In
1884, In Heppner. then a part of
I'matilla county.
In the spring of 1885 Morrow coun
ty was created and he was appointed
the first school superintendent of that
county. In January, 1885, he began
service as district attorney under an
appointment from Governor Z. P.
Moody, and was elected in July, 1886,
and re-elected In 1888 to the same
office.
After the second congressional dis
trict of Oregon was created, he was
