It will be located somewhere In the mountainous region lying between the Crow's Nest pass branch of the C. P. H. and the main line, and will serve the same purpose as the famous Yel lowstone national park In Wyoming, under the control of the war depart ment. Munson, who has recently visited the Salmon river country, where the state has made selections of timber land, which will be leased to the stockmen of that section for summer range. Mr. Munson was In the city yester day and completed filings on approx imately 4200 acres of timber land re cently selected In the Salmon river section. During the time the selec tions were being made he discussed the grazing question with a large number of the Salmon river stock men and reports that many are mak ing arrangements to dispose of cat tle and take up sheep, because the ranges have been depleted of the good grass and are now only fit for cheep pasture. He says such men as Frank Wyatt w ill soon be out of the cattle business and engaged In wool growing and the general conditions of the Salmon riv er valley will bring larger returns from sheep than from cattle, which will result in the complete elimina tion of cattle from that section with in a few years. Conditions arc generally improv ing and there are now fewer idle men staying here than ut any time for the past six months. ' states Manager f Smith of the Onduwa urn, says tne Spokane Chronicle. "Up to 10 o'clock this morning sent 12 men to work, and each day is seeing an Increase in the demand for men. The business of our free employment bureuu is constantly on the Increase. "The men sent out from this office are generally sent to ranches or rail road construction camps, though i number go to fill places as general In borers. We are now keeping up a dally average of nbout a dozen men who arc given positions. "There are at the present time a great many men stopping here who nre well qualified to do gardening work ami if any householder tele phones us we can easily supply him with a man. "Fewer transients are arriving here than for some time past. The men coming In now are generally from the east or from British Columbia." Rural Spirit Questions Action of County in Discharging Inspector. The Rural Spirit says of Grant county's action in discharging her stock Inspector: Three years ago Grant county had 40 bands of scabby sheep. Today she has none. A vigorous campaign waged by the county Inspector in harmony with the federal officers, has cleared up the pest. The patient ll cured and the doctor discharged. But will he stay cured, and which Is cheaper, to look after and take care of his health or to doctor him up after he gets down slek again? Grant county thinks because her flocks are free of scab that she can not afford to keep a.i inspector on a salary any longer. We fear this is false economy. With sheep coming onto her ranges from five other counties whose business it is to see that these visiting flocks are free front scab? I The time to lock the door I? before I the horse Is stolen. With the scab I once eradicated and with some one whose business It Is to keep vigilant WStoh and take prompt steps to stamp It out upon Its first appearance, it will be an easy matter to keep It ou of the county. But with no one to look after It and with outside sheep coming In during grazing senson It Is apt to be only a short time until the germ will be plentiful again. With the amount of wealth Grant couaty has Invested In sheep nnd other stock she can well afford to keep a good man on pay to look after their welfare she can not afford not to do so. Cliangrd t Umatilla County. The trial of W. R. Deal, who s ac cused of the crime of the larceny of a horse, will be held in Pendleton a week from Monday, says the La Orande Star. The defendant was ar rested on information sworn to bv Bd Hailey. a farmer in the valley who is the owner of the animal which is claimed to have been stolen. An application was made for a change of venue to Umatilla county, and the same was granted. District Attorney Ivanhoe will prosecute the case the same as if it had been for trial In this county. night for Portland upon a business trip. Alexander returned today from an extended visit with relatives to Baker City. R. J. Davis of Milton, came down from that town last evening for a brief visit here. Mrs. Ed Koontz and Mrs. William Miller of Athena, are among Pendle ton visitors today. Mrs. Henry Dell, wife of the Athe na merchant, has been among the Athena visitors here today. Wm H. Daugherty of the Umatilla Ranch company at Echo, Is In the city upon a business trip. J. A. Borle, proprietor of the Bing ham Springs resort, came down on No. 1 today on a brief business visit. E. T. Wade, who has been seriously 111 with the grip for the past week, Is out again today for the first time. J. H. Garrison, who was formerly located here, is in the city today from Toppenlsh, Wash., where he Is now living.
