Relay Carnival at Werkcloy Um Flrat Ever Held on tin- Pacific Coast 'Colleges, High Schools an.l Acad nileH Joining In a Splendid Out door Event at California University. Berkeley, Cal., April 10. Under the auspices of the University of Cal ifornia, the first big relay carnival ever conducted on the Pacific coast will be held here tomorrow, and Is .attracting athletes from all parts of the coaut region. College athletes, club runners, grammar school nsplrants and novi ces not affiliated with any organlza tlon will take part In the different relays scheduled for the carnival. In the special events, the highest class competition Is assured, owing to In vitations having heen sent to the best runners on the const nnd some al most entirely now mnterlal will ap pear, and the events have been so ar ranged us to be novel as woll as spec tacular. Tho mile Invitation Is one of the five Invitation events, the others be ing the shotput. ptfle vault, high Jump and hundred-yard dash. The relays, which compose the best features of the big field day, tho Pacific coast relay carnival, the offi cial name given the affair, will also be divided Into five events as fol lows: aramma'r school relay, for teams of six boys, inn yards each. A banner will be given the winning team. Dual relay races between high schools challenging each other, to be run off according to the wliOi of th" contestants as tn distance, etc. High school championship of one mile for teams nf five men. each to run 352 yards. Club championship, of similar na ture and open to all clubs of two roonthf standing. College championship, with the same conditions as In the foregoing, cnp to be awarded In the cases of the various championships. In addition there will be a special novice race, open to any amateur on the Pnclflc coast who has never won a first prliie In any running rnce. The relay carnival will he held tin der the auspices of the T'nlvor'lty of California on the varsity cinder path and will begin at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning. The arrangements, direc tions, nnd management of the nff.ilr have been placed In the hands of the "PlR C" society of the university. The fraternities and house cluhs at the university are making elaborate ar rangements and nre looking forward with considerable pleasure to the en tertainment of the visiting athletes. CATHOLICS TO ORGANIZE. National league of Sooletle U fU Intr Formed Today. Lafayette. Ind.. April 10. A na tional league of the Catholic societies of American universities and.'folleges will be organized as the- result of a convention opened today at Purdue University. Institutes from the Atlantic to the Pacific are represented by dele gates. Including Harvard and other big eastern universities. Nearly all Important colleges have local socletlei of Catholic students, and by organiz ing ob a national scale the work of bodies of this nature will be central ized and rendered more effective. The leaders state that there Is no 1 combative purpose In their uniting but rather they recognize the Import ance of 'the social movement now be ing experienced In this country and that by uniting they are merely Iden tifying themselves with the spirit of the time. Then, too, there Is the great advan tage to be gained from an Interchange of Ideas and a comparison of methods in vogue at the various Institutions for holding the students of this creed together. Other results are also expected and one of the motives that has not been brought Into the foreground as yet 18 the formation of a sort of National Lecture bureau where the best Cath olic speakers of the land may be se cured to give talks upon various sub jects of interest to Catholic students and people generally. Taft Adherents Say They Will Have 18 of S3 Delegates. Boston, Apll 10. With Postmaster General George von L. Meyer presid ing as chairman, the Massachusetts republican state convention was call ed to order in Tremont Temple at 10:30 o'clock this morning. After the transaction of preliminary business, the convention adjourned until this afternoon, when four dele gates at Urge to the national conven tion will be elected. Lodge, Crane and Bates are almost sure of places among the "big four," but a lively fight is expected in the selection of the fourth delegate. The choice for the latter lies be tween former Secretary of the Navy John D. Long and Colonel Sydney O Begney, the Taft candidate. Congressional district conventions will be held next week lrf many Mas sachusetts districts. In nearly all die trlcts tho principal Issue between the candidates for delegates Is the sup port of Taft. Adherents of the war secretary de clare that they will secure at least 18 of the 32 delegates from this state This is denied by the antl-Taft men who say that not more than nine or Bond Bros. Th deoartment of agriculture to day announced the reports of agents of the bureau of statistics crop re porting board that the average condi tion of winter wheat on April 1 was 91.3 per cent against 89.9 per cent on April 1, HO; 98.1 on April 1, 1908, 91. per cent on April 1, 1906, and S8.2 he 10-year average, says a Washington dispatch.
