At a meeting this week of the Chamber of Commerce committee and the finance committee of the city council, it was agreed that the mu nicipality should give $5000 towards making this part of the program a success. The council committee told the celebration committee If the amount named Is not sufficient, to call upon the city for more and It would be Immediately forthcoming. The system of electrical display will include a novel and quite strik ing feature, namely, the Illumination of what Is called Seattle's upper and lower sky lino. The upper sky line Is created by the high buildings along th" summit of the first hill overlook ing the city, and the lower along the tops of the business blocks. Portlaml Jobbers Prepare to Kenoli Central Oregon People Portland jobbers and business men generally will have a decided advan tage In the Klamath district as soon as the Calflornia Northwestern rail road, now being built from Weed to Kb.rr.ath Falls, is opened for a por tion of that distance, sayB the Port land Oregonian. It Is promised that on May t. the new line will have been completed as far as Doris. Cal., which is just be low the Oregon state line. By the use of this new railroad through rates from Portland to the Klamath country will be established that will be lower than the present rates from Portland to the same destination, al though the 'haul will be much longer by the new route. At present freight from San Fran cisco and Portland, destined to the Klamath country, Is hauled to Thrall on the Southern Pacific, and thence to Pokegama over the line of the Klamath Lake railroad. From Poke gama freight Is hauled In by teams to Klamath Falls. San Francisco merchants have a slight advantake "n rates by this route, although the differential against Portland is slight. But with the opening of the new road Portland will be on an exast equality with San Francisco via Weed and Doris. Construction of the Cali fornia Northeastern will be pushed and It will not be long until the track will have been completed to Klamath Falls, where It will connect with the Oregon Eastern from. Natron, the line already projected by the Southern Pa cific. When the road is completed from Natron to Klamath Falls Portland merchants will have a more direct route to the Klamath basin but the rates to be put In May 1 will proba ( bly be as low as will be made by the direct line. Eugene, April 10. An attempt !s i being made by the enemies of the j University of Oregon to create prej udice against the appropriation bill , through misrepresentation. They Claim that the university hires a foot bal coach at $15i'0 for a little more than two months' "instruction." As a matter of fact, the university i. it nothing to lo with the hiring of a coach, other than to see that he Is the right kind of man. Neither have the Students ever paid $1500 for a ccach, and further, the coach's sal ary' is paid entirely from the gate re ceipts of such games as the ones with U. Oregon Agricultural college and ' uluiomah. They say that the increase in ap propriation Is 300 per cent, when they know that the university has receiv ed 178.500 for the past two years, and the increase can only be 59 per tent. 'EVeli if the one Item of $47,500 of the old appropriation bill were taken, the Increase would be only a' little over half of what they claim. They say also that the university has shown bud faith in pushing this bill by going to the courts on tech nicalities. As a matter of record, the enemies of the university were the first to appeal to the courts, when the secretary of state refused to file their petitions, and later carried the case to the supreme court. The friends of the university have appealed to the courts only once, and then when the title was manifestly unjust and misleading. Those are but examples of the misrepresentations used by the opposition throughout their arguments. ENOCH ARSE AT PHOSSKR. It required 40 years for Margaret Eoosemore to find that William Loosemore was not a suitable husband. She sued him for divorce yesterday In superior court, alleging that he had been cruel to her. They were married In Missouri In 1568, and. according" to the com plaint of Mrs. Loosenmore, her hus band was not cruel to her until last fall. The case has been set for trial at the approaching term of the su perior court. Former Husband of Young Wife Comes on the Scene riKpectlly. Mrs. Evans admitted the truth of Burt's story, although claiming her marriage was annulled, and' in an guish, has fied to her mother in Se attle. Apparently Burt's coming here was the .merest accident, There Is nothing to Indicate that he knew the was here before he came. Burt has been in trouble with the city officials here, having once been arrested for drunkenness and orderV ed to leave the city. Evans, who Is the son of one of the pioneer resi dents of the city, Is sure his wife will return. Through a bill recently introduced In congress by Senator Joseph M. Dixon of Montana, the American Bi son society formally called upon the government to establish a national herd of bison on the Flathead In dian reservation, in northwestern Montana, says a Washington paper.
