Candidates are now coming into the city thick and fast, and politics seem to be the main topic of conversation John Peebler. candidate for county recorder, came up from Pendleton Tuesday. A party at the opera house Friday evening was attended by about 75 guests. Cards and dancing were the features of the entertainment. John son's orchestra of Pendleton, furn ished the music. Mrs. Areta Plamondon was In He lix yesterday In her auto upon short visit. H. C. Bryson. an attorney of Walla Walla, was in Athena and Weston Tuesday. Georke Mulkey of the Umatilla river. Is spending a few days In the city. Misses Laura Bowles and Carrie Wler of Walla Walla, visited with Mrs. F. P. LaGrow over Sunday last. They are teachere In the Walla Walla high school. Miss Velma Wilkinson of this place, who has Just finished teaching a six months' term of school in district No. 49, has gone to Weston to enter the Normal until June, tjhe will teach again next year. The weather has been first-class here the last few days and wheat Is looking fine. The growers tsjr, how ever, that they would like a little rain later in the season. The revival meetings which will be held here the latter part of the month at the M. E. church, promise to be the best in this vicinity for some time A noted evangelist from the east will be here for two weeks to preach. PRACTICALLY ALL RIGHT OF WAY IS SECURED Weston Expects Line In Six Months' Tbne Women Take Active Interest In Improving the City W1U Beau tify and Clean in General Bishop Paddock Hen? Sunday. Weston, April 9. The Walla Wal la Traction company has at this time positively secured practically all of the right of way for the extension of the electric line from Milton to Wes ton. With the exception of a very lew miles near Weston everything is sure. Most of the farmers along Dry creek gave the company the right of way through their lands, and it is thought they will have ne difficulty in securing the balance Officials of the line have been In Weston at va rious times of late, and while it is understood that they are very anxious to secure a right of way through the main part of town, and 1 they will meet with the city council at the next meeting. It is also stated that the company Is making arrangements to go on to Athena, and later t0 Pendleton, and If nothing happens there will be an electric line through Weston ho six months' time. To Improve City. The Women's Club of Weston and the city council have voted to cooper ate In the movement for a general cleaning up. and all will work togeth er for the beautifying of the city. An enthusiastic mass meeting was held Tuesday at the opera house, at which speeches were made for the cause by different prominent Weston women. Mrs. Kirkpatrick was appointed organizer, and the following commit tee was appointed, and they will later appoint assistants: Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Proebstel. Mrs. R. Lleuallen, Mrs. Barnes, Mrs. Hasbrook and Miss Craig. The committees will meet at the home of Mrs. Proebstel Saturday afternoon, when their respective du ties will be assigned. Civic improve ment has come to stay. Bishop Paddock Coming. The Right Reverend Bishop R. L. Paddock of the Episcopal Jurisdic tion of eastern Oregon, will hold ser vices hero Sunday next, both morn ing and evening. Cake Makes Speech. Hon. H. M. Cake, who spoke at Athena Tuesday afternoon came over here and made a speech early in the evening on Main street which drew a good crowd. Many from here also went to Athena to hear him. Mr. Cake has many political admirers In this section of the country. J. R. Carlisle, who has been ill for some time, is stlli confined to his bed. Mr. B, B. Hall has gone to Spo kane in response td 4 telegram, an nouncing the serious Hli?M of her father. Some of the amateur ball tossers have organized what is known as "Rainbow Team." Royal E. The Idaho Paper company, Ltd., of Boise, Idaho, a branch concern of the Pacific Paper company of Portland, has been organized with a capital stock of $40,009, and will at once open a wholesale paper house In this city, says the Boise Capital News. President Hugh McGulre of the home company at Portland, has been in the city for two or three days clos ing final arrangements which were perfected today. He announces that the new company will carry a com plete stock of wrapping paper, paper bags, print paper and other such ma terial usually carried by a modern pa per house. The officers of the company are Hugh McGulre, president; T. N. Stop penbach. vice president; F. S. Hard ing, treasurer, and W. E. Stoppenbnrh. secretary. " F. S. Harding, who has been con nected with the Welser Signal for some time, and W. E. Stoppenbach. the secretary, will remain in Boise and will have charge of the local busi ness. Their territory will extend from Huntington to Twin Falls and all In land points. At a late hour this afternoon a place of business had not been decid ed upon, but several places were under consideration and some convenient building will be leased. A part of the stock will arrive In a very few days and the full stock will be on hand within 60 days. The Pacific Paper company, of which the local company is a branch, is one of the largest paper houses In the country, and the largest exclusive paper house on the Pacific coast, and its coming to Boise is a recognition of the central location of this city as a wholesale point and a guarantee that a large business will be built up. April 9. The marriage two of the well known young people of Adams took place at Pendleton Tuesday. Everett McCollum and Ma bel Baker having been united. The bride and groom are both well and favorably known to . host of friends here, and they will make their home here. The bride is a daughter of M. A. Baker. Some Wheat in nouses. There are still about 8000 sacks of wheat stored In the warehouses here for shipment, and about 3000 at the Eastland warehouse. It Is thought that this will find a good market a little later. The fall sown grain Is looking well so far. though the farmers complain of it being a little dry. A good rain is looked for soon. J. T. Lleuallen was In Athena yes terday on business.
