Thorp, who has been In the county since 1861, was on Satur day elected president of the Yakima County Pioneers' society, says the Yakima Republic. A. J. Splawn, who came here about the same time, Is vice president, and J. J. Wiley, who came here in 1868, Is secretary. The society has a membership of 150, which means that that many came here prior to January 1, 1885, that Is prior to the establishment of the railroad 'and means therefore, that they rodo, or walked In. Early In May tho society will again meet at the Institute rooms In the court house when the committee on constitution and by-laws will report. The committee consists of Hon. D. E. Lcsh, A. J. Splawn, Wesley F. ojnes, E. B. Marks and T. O. Redfleld. After the society is properly organ Izcd there will be a number of social meetings In the way of reunions and at which papers and addresses on early history will be presented. ' New Hotel for Tins Dalles. Articles of incorporation creating The Dalles Hotel company, with a capital stock of 175,000, were filed with the county clerk of Wasco coun ty Saturday, says an Item from The Dalles. It Is understood that the company will erect a 176,000 brick hotel in this city within the next year. The company consists of 60 represen tative business men of The Dalles. Simultaneously with the filing of these papers came a plue prlne from G. Frlewalt, of Portland, who is pro prietor of the Hotel Portland build ing in this city, with a diagram of the proposed improvements to take place In that building. According to the plans set forth in the blue print, the Albert building, which is now a two-story brick, will receive an added story and also be extended 60 feet In the rear. , Tliree Rapt) for a BotUe. William Stocher, proprietor of the Idaho Brewing & Malting company, was found guilty in municipal court this afternoon for keeping the back door of the brewery saloon at 606 Main street open on Sunday, and was fined $200 by Judge Flenner, says the Boise Capital News. Stoehr entered a plea of not guilty to the charge and his attorney, Milton Cage, has given verbal notice of appeal. To operate boats on the Columbia river out of Kennewlck, do a general forwarding business and establish an oil and fuel house for the purpose of supplying the demands of eastern Washington are the objects of u big company now being organized and for which articles of Incorporation are being prepared, says the Kennewlck Beporter. Two boats for passengers, freight and express will be operated by the company for the present. The Matta 1 1 over will be used for passengers and freight and the Kennewlck, the new boat being built In Seattle by the Se attle Gas Engine Machinery com pany, will be used for passengers, mall and express, the Kennewlck be ing the fastest boat on the Columbia river and designed to ply between this city and Priest Rnplds. The Kennewlck Transportation company is the name of the new or ganization and it is the Intention to operate boast In every direction out of Kennewlck, up the Columbia, down the Columbia and on the Snako river. A general forwarding business will also be conducted and all river points will be accommodated by the service contemplated by the new com pany. The first gun will be fired next week In Chattanooga, when Governor Pat terson and ex-Senator Carmnck will meet In Joint debate. Later the stump speaking will be continued all over the state. ' Both men have numerous partisans and trouble Is likely to develop at some of the meetings In backwoods counties, where the political game Is taken very seriously by the natives. Through un Investment three years ago of $350 in Nevada mining stock, a Salt Lake man has cleaned up $60,000, and his brother, a Pocatello clerk, will share the good fortune, the deal having been made between the two of them, says the Pocatello Tribune. The lucky Salt Laker is B. L. London, and his brother, I. Jack Ixtndon, who has been employed for some time in Jacobs' department store In this city, last week received the good news from Zlon. The London boys trree years ago purchased 3000 shares of Furnace Creek Copper Min ing company stock for 16 cents per share. The stock Is now quoted at $20 per share, so that the holdings of the London boys are now worth $60,000. Jack left for Salt Lake Sat urday to secure his share f the for tune. Two hundred of the best reproductions from famous masterpieces are to be displayed. The exhibit U under the auspices of the public schools of North Yakima. The women's clubs are tak ing up the matter and will be pat ronesses of the affair. The proceeds derived will go toward purchasing decorations for the several schools of the city. Each school sells tickets for the -occasion. The amount obtain ed by each school will go toward pur chasing pictures and statuary for the different rooms of that building. Mont., April 9. Hundreds of members vof the Grand Army of the Republic assembled In Butte this morning at the opening of the twenty-fourth annual encampment of the department of Montana. Head quarters have been established at the Butte Hotel and the business sessions which wlll extend through three days, will be held In Good Templars' Tall. The local committees are work ing valiantly to fulfill their promise to give the boys In blue "the time of their lives." Special excursions will lake the veterans through the mines In the vicinity and other entertain ments have been provided for.
