Hermiston ana the east end of the county prom ises to get their share of the home seekers that are coming west this spring. People want small farms, and this ll the place to find them. Water can bi secured from the government this season; and everything Is In fair way to successs for the fertile lands under the Umatilla project and other Irrigation concerns in this vicinity of the county. Teachers)' Institute. A teachers' Institute will be held here next Saturday for the teachers In this end of the county. Morton, attorney for the reclamation service U arrang ing to leave In a few days time for the Okanogan country in Washington, where he will look after the legal affairs of the Okanogan project. All things are moving along nicely on the Umatilla project, and where test? have been made in running water over lands In the vicinity, all has been satisfactory. Professor L C Lewis of the Oregon Agricultural experimental station, at Corvalll. recently conducted two meetings at the Hermiston hall. He gave some very good Information as to how to plant fruit trees, etc. The meetings were well attended. A number of the progressive cltl xens are taking steps to organize a fire company in Hermlston. Colonel J. F. McXaught Is driving a fine team of horses which he re cently purchased from Jack Brown. th well known Pendleton wool buyer. It Is one of the finest teams In this section of the county. Colonel Mc Vmieht Is verv enthusiastic over the fine new livery barn which is being erected here, and which will soon be ready for use. He says that some of the finest horses and turnouts in the state will be found here. Weaton. April 6. Wheat growers state that while the fall-sown wheat Is looking fine, they would like to see a little more rain and warmer weather at this season of the year to Insure good results. Itt Is believed, however, that there will" be but very little more cool weather. Mrs. Elizabeth Baiter, who has been quite 111 with pneumonia for some days, is being attended by Mlsb Winn, a professional nurse. Mrs. Cora Fetters, of Spokane, has been visiting with her mother, Mrs. Wm. Drlscoll, for some days. Mrs. Walter Ely of Boise has been visiting friends and relatives here for several days. A brother of President Campbell of U. of O., gave a piano recital at the Normal Assembly hall Saturday evening, which was largely attended and much appreciated. Though only 17 years of age the young man Is con sidered a wonder. The fifth week dance for the stud ents of the normal occurred Satur day evening, and It was a very en joyable affair. For two hours every fiva weeks students are allowed to have a dance, which is done to keep thm from going to the dances given In the town. The students of the Normal havt been congratulating W. W. Scales on his good fortune in falling heir to over $100,000 as the result of a suit Just terminated in California. This seems to make no difference to Scales, however, who studies as zeal ously as before. A Twenty Year Sentence. Muny Building Will Go Up in This Vicinity This Season Freewater, April 6. A special se ries of revival meetings are being held at the Baptist church, which are being well attended. Rev. Mr. Rogers of the Baptist church In Athe na, has been conducting them. Mrs. George Harshman of Sunny- side, has been quite 111 for some days. William Johnson is making ar rangements to erect a fine home in Freewater. A number of nice build ings are going up this spring, which will be for people living about here. Mrs Robert Romine has sold her property In Milton to Frank W. Shields for a consideration of $3, 000. C. A. Milton Notes. Milton. April 6. Miss Ethel Mar tin, director of music and elocution at Columbia college, gave a recital at the M. E. church in Walla Walla Friday evening, which has brought forth much praise from the people of Walla Walla. She is not only skllfull on the piano, but she Is also an adept In voice culture. A number of the Odd Fellows of this place were In Walla Walla Fri day evening to attend a meeting of the Odd Fellows lodge at that place. A banquet was served. Fishing Is said to be first class In the river at this time, some very good catches having been made re cently. Death Was On His Heels. Jesse P. Morris of Skippers.
