the foreshadow of an early attack by
the railroads upon the Oregon state
railway commission was the outcome
of a meeting of leading men of western
railroads today when it was decided
that for their own protection a vigor
ous fight must be made against all at
tempts on the part of the state com
missions to reduce the rates either of
freight or passenger.
A fight on the Illinois 2 cent rate
was decided upon at once and other
legal battles will be Joined with the
state commission In other states.

A loss of between $308 nnd $400
was caused to J. F. Robinson's Do
rnestlc laundry by a fire that broke
out In the rear of the laundry about
2:30 this morning. That the damage
was light Is due to the prompt and
efflilent work of the fire department.
The 'blaze occurred In the sorting
room of the laundry, which Is the
wooden lean-to directly In rear of the
main building. How the fire became
started Is a mystery but It s attribut
ed to a heating stove In the room
Though the sorter in the laundry says
the fire was allowed to go out during
th day yesterday, the fact that the
near tho stove Indicates that It was
the origin.
At the time hf the fire there was
but 'little clothing In the sorting
room, owing to the fact that it was
ate in the week. However, the room
wns completely destroyed and the loss
will reach several hundred dollars. It
was fully covered by Insurance.

fire from spreading to the main
