Inquiries from more than 2000 persons and concerns In North and South America and Europe were re ceived by the chamber of commerce during March, says the Spokesman Review. Letters requesting that the senders be furnished with special Information and literature were received from every state In the Union and every province in Canada. All the principal countries In Europe are represented among those whose letters to . the chamber of commerce show their In terest In the Spokane country. The majority of the Inquiries from within the United Suites came from the middle and middle-west states. Sev eral letters were received from peo ple In Mexico and South American countries and European communica tions came from England, France, Holland, Germany, Russia and Switzerland. A letter was received from W. J. Collins of Volent, Pa., announcing that he will leave Newcastle, Pa., the latter part of this month at the head of a party of 87, which will visit Spokane and go on a lund-spylng ex pedition through the Inland empire. A Washington dispatch to the Ore gon Dully Journal says of Senator Bourne's attitude on the legislative corruption at Salem in 1903, as detail ed by Lincoln Steffens: Senator Bourne refuses absolutely either to confirm or to deny Lincoln Steffens' story In the March Ameri can Magazine, to the effect that Har vey W. Scott entered into a deal with Bourne in 1903, whereby the editor expected to be elected to the United Stutes senate. "I have not read the Steffens story and I don't propose to," Is Bourne's Invariable answer to all Inquiries on the subject. He declines absolutely to discuss the matter any furtner. When asked iiolnt blank whether he had an agreement with Scott as to the senatorshlp In 1101, he declined posi tively to be Interviewed. The deal alleged by Steffens to have been made between Harvey W. Scott and Jonathan Bourne Is related In an article published In the March Issue of the American Magazine. Steffens says that on the last day of the legislative session of 1903, Mr. Scott wrote out with his own hand the following agreement, which ns then transmitted to Bourne: "In case 1 receive Jonathan Hourne, Jr.'s support for United States senator at the Joint session of the legislature tonight, I hereby agree to use the full power of the Morning Oregonlan and the Evening Telegram to defeat John H. Mitchell at the next senatorial election and elect Jonathan Bourne, Jr. In his place. "I further agree that If I receive the support of Jonathan Bourne, Jr. for United States senator In the joint session of the legislature tonight that if elected I will turn all the federal patronage over to Jnnathnn Bourne, Jr. "1 hereby further agree In lieu (view?) of receiving the support of Jonathan Bourne tonight at the joint session of the legislature that whether elOOted or not I will pay to Jonathan Bourns $25,000 In United States gold coin."
