Freewater. April 4. Money Is rap idly being raised for the purpose of dyking the Walla Walla and Umatilla rivers to prevent danger from future floods. Petitions are In circulation asking the county court to give gener ous support In the undertaking, and nearly $3000 has already been raised In subscriptions by the various ranch ers. Carmichael have been tie from Weston this week visiting friends for a short time. GERMANS TO GROW BEETS. Twenty-Five Families Will Emigrate From Walla Walla Valley to Union County. I-a Grande. April 3. Two men are here from the Walla Walla valley, looking over the sugar beet culture problem, with a view of ascertaining the conditions here, and in case they return with a favorable report, no less than 25 families from the Walla Walla valley, who are experienced gardeners, will come with the Idea of growing beets. Weston, April 4. The Thirteenth annual reunion of the Umatilla county Pioneer association which will continue here May 28, 29 and 30, promises to be the biggest event of the kind held here for years. Dr. F. D. Hashbrouck has been elected chairman and Clark Wood has been elected secretary of the general committee. Different committees are now at work, and a meeting will be held April 13. when thev will reDOr.. the progress being made. David B. Camnbell of Monmouth will give a piano recital at the Nor mal assembly hall tonight. Mr. Camp bell is a young man of remarkable musical genius and he. promises to give a high class entertainment. A number of the young people here will take part in the play. G. H. Sams, formerly of Freewater. haa purchased the J. H. Clark quar ter section of land on Drv creek for a consideration of $6600. Mr. Sams will move his family here and take possession at once. To Shear Sheep. J. H. Ridenous and James Harris will Join the Hughes and Kenrnev crew of shearers and will begin tha season with Herbert- Bryson's flock at Le Grow Biding. Thev will fin ish in Montana, where they have con tracted to shear 50,000 head and lat er they will shear many thousand more heud. A teachers' institute for the teach ers in this section of the county will be held here on April 26. CALEDONIAN PICNIC. Date Has Been Set and Much Interest Is Manifested. Athena, April 4. It has been de cided by the members of the Cmatlt la Caledonian society to hold the an nual Caledonlun picnic at Athena on Friday and Saturday, May 22 and 23. Invitations will be sent out to other Caledonian societies throughout Ore gon and eastern Washington, and re duced rates will be secured on the railroads. This promises to be better than all former picnics given here. Saturday, May 23, the last day of the picnic, will end with general political rally and candidates will be given a chance to meet the crowds of voters In this section of Oregon. T. T, Geer was a visitor from Pen dleton this week in the interest of his candidacy for representative. II. M. Cake Will Speak. Hon. H. M. With the big ship ments of cattle that have been sent out from here In the past several days, there are but few cattle left that have been feeding during the winter. The .stork looks first-class and this has been an excellent year for feeding Owing to the good weather, there Is much hay left in this section of the county. The growers expect to find a good sale for It during the summer months, and some will be shipped out. Preparing to Shear. Beginning at this time next week, sheep shearing will be on In this sec tion of the country. In the Butter creek country many thousand head will be sheared by hand, and many of the shearerH are already In the field. Thp shearing plant which wnH recently purchased by prominent sheepmen in this vicinity Is rapidly be ing prepared for use. W. H. Daugherty of the Umatilla Ranch company, reports the sales of several small tracts of land In the past week, and says that he still has more to sell. These lands are subject to Irrigation and only a few miles from here. Among the recent purchasers are Mr. Reeves. 47 acres, and G. E. Ward, 60 acres. REDUCING COUNTY DEBT. Union County Commissioners Cut Off One Half County Indebtedness in One Day. Orande. April 3 The county l.ht In Union countv was reduced the enormous sum of $50,412.08 by the county court yesterday afternoon which closed what Is no doubt one f Co the most remarkable sessions In years. This large lump was taken from the county's debt by cancelling warrants totaling that amount This leaves the county debt at something like $60, 000 Adjournment was taken late in the afternoon, after routine business had been transacted County Judge Henry and Commis sioners J M. Selder and Ben Brown were engaged nearly all forenoon and a greater portion oi me miernuun hi cancelling county warrants, which they did to the extent of $50,000, thus reducing the county debt to about $65,000, this amount including the estimated accrued Interest on out standing warrants. The present county court Is rapidly reducing the colossal debt until now it Is only a matter of not more than two years more until Union county can look every man squarely In the face with the realization that she has not a creditor in existence.
