A correspondent at La Grande says of u wedding which failed at that place this week: Henry Shaefer, who has a ranch at the head of Missouri Hollow, near Pumpkin Ridge, was almost rharrled the other day. He would have been If his prospective bride had not sud denly developed a case of "cold feet" and "flew the coop." It seems Henry advertised In a mat rlmonlal Journal for a spouse and by this medium got in communication with I Mrs. Hudley of Ohio. She came to La Orande last Thursday and was met by Mr. Shaefer at the depot. As It was too late to get a marriage li cense they hired a cab and drove out to Mr. Shaefer's brother's home at Island City, where they spent the night. The next day they came in to get married, at least that Is what Shae fer thought, but Mrs Hadley evident ly had other plans. She brought all her things wljh her, and on reaching here told her "affinity" that Oregon would never he "home, sweet home" for her and that she longed to get back to Ohio, as the country did not look good to her. Henry was completely upset on hearing this, but manfully took his medicine and finding her determined to go, bought her n ticket and sent her on her way. ELKS Itl'V ('MB in ii. din'. I.a Grande Lodge Taki Over Com nierclal Club PtfOUBfif, The La Orande Star says: The La Grande lodge of Elks, de cided last night to buy the Commer cial club property. -Yesterday morn ing the. proposition was first broach ed and through the day the matter was well canvassed among the Elks' membership. An option was secured for the property as It stands for the sum of $9500. The offer on this basis has been accepted and the Elks will proceed Immediately to finunce the matter and the transfer should be completed within u week. The Commercial club building and ground Is on the verge of mortgage foreclosure, and the agreement reach ed last night will no doubt prove of advantage to all concerned and at the same time save the humiliation that would follow a forced sale of the property in order to meet the indebt edness standing against the Institu tion. At the price agreed to be paid, It Is said, the indebtedness and accru ed Interest will be paid and all the stockholders will be compensated for their Investment. The lodge organization has In view some changes in the building to make It suitable for lodge room purposes, and It Is probable, also, that arrange ments will he effected whereby the commercial organization will be pro vided with a suitable home at a cost that will be within Its reach. Viewed In all respects the transaction is re garded as one of benefit to the Elk fraternity, to the commercial organ ization and to the community in general. The family lived in Utica, New York, but Inter removed to California, and from there to Iloseburg. Yesterday Scales was in Pendleton for the purpose of buying spring clothing and though he said little concerning his good fortune, he was plainly Jubilant over the same as well he might be. The $105,000 which he has Just received was in volved in litigation over his father's estate and the amount was but re cently awarded the mother and son by decision of the California court, before which the case was tried. An industrial agency may be es tablished by the Oregon Short Line In Boise, doing away with the office of district passenger agent, accord ing to Assistant General Freight Agent F. H. Plalsted, who is in Boise spending a few days, says the Boise Statesman. Mr. Plalsted also brings the news that work will soon commence on the Northwestern road, which up until the time of the panic was building. Vice President and General Manager Bancroft visited Huntington n regard to this matter Monday, stopping in Boise on his way back to Salt Lake. Just how soon work Is to begin again on the road from Huntington up the Snake river or how large a force would be put on, Mr. Plalsted was not able to say. The mutter of establishing an in dustrial agency In Boise In place of the district passenger and freight agent's office is being considered quite earnestly by officials of the road. If such an office Is established in Boise, and it Is believed it will be, as It Is far more Important than a dis trict passenger and freight agent's office, both to the railroad and the people of Idaho, there will be several ! assistants tu the agents who will con tinually keep in touch with what Is being done by the commercial clubs! and other like organizations that are I helping to build up the west at a re- markablc rate. It will be his business to travel ' mucn or the time and know what is being done where there are openings for people wishing different lines of business, and have a general m,,m of Information that the nver.nr I person wishing to settle In this part of the country would care to know. The work done by the district pas senger and freight agent will be large ly cared for by traveling agents. Much more of this work is done now by traveling men than several years ago.
