News of Son's Death. By telegram Monday, Dr. Sharp was notified of the death of his son Eflmo.id. a ' young attorney of Paul, Minn. Referendum Vote Necessary, The new saloon ordinance which was passed by the council 30 days ago, has had the referendum placed on It and It will now be held up un til the third day of March next year, when It will be voted upon. Adams, June 13. Adams Is arrang ing to have a harvest festival toward nil this year, which promises to be quite an elaborate affair. Preliminary arrangements are already under way, City Marshal J. O. Garrett has just completed the construction of a new bridge near Main street, between the two saloons. Dr. F. A. Lieuallen is still visiting with his parents at Adams and will not return to Huntington until he has entirely recovered from the effects of his recent spell of tonsil ltls. Miss Bessie Baker has gone to up per McKay creek to visit with the James Seney family. The Inland Mercantile company Is having the front of Its place of busi ness nicely painted. ' The wheat crops in all of Umatilla county, and In the great district sur rounding Helix. Athena. Weston and Adams, never looked better than at this time. The rains have made a first class crop certain, and all farmers are rejoicing. ' Lost Valuable Horse. Jesse Hales, one of the well known Adams wheatgrowers, has Just lost a valuable mare. The animal was sick several days and Dr. McNabb of Pen dleton, was called but nothing could be done to save It. , Before Recorder's' Court. Charlie Whirlwind and Charlie Matches, two Indians, were brought before Recorder Gregorle's court yes terday for being drunk and disorderly. They were each fined 110 and costs. VISIT FROM OMAHA TOURISTS, Presrnted With Frnit and Flowers at Milton and Freewater. Freewater, June 13. The Omaha business men paid a brief visit Freewater and Milton Tuesday morn Ing, many of them coming over on the mterurban line from Walla Wal In and taking their train on to Pen dleton from here. Only a few mo ments were spent at each place, but it was greatly appreciated. The Omahans were presented with boxes of fine ripe cherries and straw berrlei and they went on their way rejoicing. SALOONKEEPER WAS FINED. Fight at Helix Results From Contro- versy Over Arrest. Helix, June 13. Dave Blggerstatf was yesterday fined $25 for keeping his saloon open on Sunday, which Is against the rules of the city. Quite a fight Is reported to have re sulted over the affair at thlB place yesterday. M. A. Fergitson, city re corder and editor of the Helix Herald, who It was said was complaining wit ness, Is reported to have entered the saloon, and ordered that the case be tried at once. To this Biggerstaff ob jected saying that he wished to con suit his attorney. , A dispute arose and Ferguson suddenly struck Bigger- staff. A lively tussle followed. In which both were quite badly but not seriously bruised. . Another fight was reported between two other parties over the same affair, though the names have not been learned. Rain Appreciated. Helix farmers are rejoicing over the late fine rains which means a great wheat yield for this section of the country. A man who Is In perfect health, so he can do an honest day's work when necessary, has much for which he should be thankful. Mr. L. C.
