Allen, former proprietor of the Central barber shop, leaves today with his family for Forest Grove, where they expect to locate. Mrs. Charles Green, wife of the woolbuyer, returned this morning from the east, where she has been visiting relatives for several weeks. W. A. Brown, proprietor of the Hotel Pendleton, has gone to Port land upon a combined business and pleasure trip and will remain sev eral days L. Strauss, the wool buyer, arrived yesterday from Lewlston, Idaho, where he had been upon a buying trip. The other members of the wool buying corps are expected here this evening from. Shanlko. Arnold Sheuerman returned this morning from a trip through Idaho, Washington and Oregon points, where he has been In the Interest of the fa mous Pendleton Indian blankets. He reports a very profitable trip. Mrs. E. J. Rockwell, of Vancou ver, B. C, who has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mc Bee for several weeks, left today for Cecil, Morrow county, to visit her brother. R. a. Over 20,000 Head to be Gathered by , OolvUIe Indians. The annual spring roundup of In dian ponies has begun on the Colvllle Indian reservation. One hundred riders were In the saddle far among the hills and val leys of the great South Half, states one account It is estimated by some of the riders that there are about 20,000 horses on the southern portion of the reservation, but a much small er number to the north. The bunch- ! grass is In evidence earlier In the ! spring along the hillsides sloping to- ; ward the Columbia than It Is farther north, and It Is here that the horses find their way when the first sign of spring appears. j The riders participating In the i roundup are principally Indians, al thoiigh there are a few white men in the ranks. Most of the whites en gaged arethose who ran horses on the reservation years ago and who never succeeded In getting all tho animals with their brands when they quit tht range. It Is these stray ani mals they are after. A surprising feature in the present roundup is that a very small per cent of the horses are found to have perished during the severe winter. The large amount of snow, the short age of feed, and the long drawn out cold weather led to a belief that there would be thousands of doad horses on the range this spring. In fact It was estimated at one time that 80 per cent of the horses would die. The present roundup Is proving this es timate far from correct, as very few carcasses have been found by the riders. Ezra Meeker to New York. Ezra Meeker, the "Oregon path finder," who recently drove an ox team across the continent marking the old Oregon trail, now announces that he will drive his ox team and covered wagon down Broadway street, New York city. While in the east this summer Mr. Meeker will seek to interest the president In making a national boulevard of the old Oregon trail across the continent. Left for La Grande.
