The result was that the girls took things in their hands and adopted the method of breaking themselves of the habit. At first pennies rained in upon the treasurer, but the last day or two they only drop seml-occaslonally. When the treasury assumes the proper pro portions the girls declare they are going to have a spread which will be no temptation to make kicks. Kernohan, wto travels for tha Equitable Savings & Loan asoclatlon, of Portland, Ore., was in Yakima last week. Mr. Kernohan visited this city two years ago und he Is surprised at the many Improvements which have appeared since that time. At that time he had Just come west from the state of Nebraska and was looking for a location. He fell Into the hands of a local real estate man who tried to sell him an SO-acre tract of land on the school section, about three miles from the city. In the old Dr. Morri son place. This land was offered to the Nebraskan for $150 an acre. He thought It was too much money to pay for farm land. "Why," said Mr. Kernohan, "ybu can buy a whole farm in Nebraska for $150. "This Is not Nebraska," answered the real estate dealer, 'and you will get a mighty good deal on this place. You'd better buy." "Not on your life. Not for my. money." "I now realize my mistake." said Mr. Kernohan to a Yakima Republic reporter. "Forty acres of that land has since sold for $350 per acre and the other 40 acres at $500 an acre. Had I bought at the time the place was offered to me I could have clear ed up $22,000." ' Mr. Kernohan Is now looking for something cheap In Yakima real estate. tilla in less than three hours, and will then lay over In Umatilla 23 hours, leaving there tomorrow night at 12: 40 on No. 4. the Spokane flyer, ar riving at Starbuck at 3:35 a. m after a run of two hours and 55 minutes. After a lav-over of 10 hours and 55 minutes at Starbuck the same en- j glneer leaves that place day after to morrow afternoon at 1:30 on No. 7, reaching this city at 5:35 that eve-, nlng. after having pulled his four j trains, on two separate branches of road, laid over 23 hours in I'matllla and nearly 11 hours In Vtarhuck. The runs on the Pendleton-Star-buek train nre vastly different from those on the Starbuck-l'matllla line, because of more trains on the main line of the Washington division. On the run between here and Starbuck j there are but few trains and the Spo- I kane passenger stops at all stations to take on passengers, while on the Snake river run between Starbuck and I'matllla the Spokane flyer has but few stops and meets and passes a large number of freight trains, since that is the main line between Spokane and I'matllla ami all the trains from the Washington division pass over it. These engineers have been on these runs for many years and are well known In Pendleton, which they claim as their home, although they lay over here but 15 hours every three days. Mr. Butler has an elegant j home In the south part of the city' and his family resides here. Mr. ! Wright and Mr. McEvoy stay at hotels when In the city, but also claim this as their home. Willamette Vulley Is Anxious to start a Flux Mill. A vigorous effort Is to be made to establish a manufacturing plant for the handling of flax in the Willam ette valley, says the Oregon Sunday Journal. James Craig, a Sllverton merchant. Is working on the project and officials of the Harriman lines are co-operating with him. Mr. Craig, who was In Portland to present the flax proposition to various people who are interested, said: "The climate and soil of western Oregon are Ideal for the production of flax and the water Is perfectly adapt ed tj the manufacturing of Its pro ducts. I have been In correspondence with manufacturers in Italy and Scotland and have secured all the necessary data to convince any busi ness man or farmer that this proposi tion Is one that would prove a great benefit for Oregon. I have sent samples of Willamette valley flax to the factory men of the old countries and they have spun It by hand and made careful examinations and com parisons. They say the Oregon flax Is as fine as any that grows. One manufacturer Is so Interested that Tie sends a complete plan for a mill. He advises that an Oregon mill should start by confining its product to crash goods and cordage." WILL HAVE SHORT FRKKDOM. Walla Walla Cimvlet Will Stif) From PrLson Into Officers' Arms.
