When Irving Was Turned Down.
Brum Stoker, who for many years
was connected with the management
of the lute Sir Henry Irving, tells of
an amusing incident which occurred
during the player's tour of the mid
dle west, says Harper's Weekly.
It appears that Irving, In order to
break a "long Jump" from Chicago to
another city, was desirous of securing
for one night the theater of a town In
Indiana. Accordingly. Stoker wired
the individual who was both proprie
tor and manager of the playhouse in
question, requesting that Sir Henry
Irving be given a night's engage
ment. In a short while Mr. Stoker receiv
ed the following: "Poes Irving pa
rade?" When shown this, the dis
tinguished Briton was much amused.
He directed Stoker to reply that "Irv
ing was a tragedian, not a minstrel.'
The further reply came, "Don't
want Irving unless he parades."

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer says

In fact, Mr. Edwards, who supplied
the musical trimmings to Mr. Stangc's
cheerful little book, wrote In several
things that require tho best musical
appreciation to execute, and this ap
plies particularly to the quintet in the
first act and a duet by W. T. Carleton

It Is a pleasure to chronicle the
second "arrival" of W. T. Carleton,
this time in the capacity of an im
presario, a condition in his profes
sional life that Is logical enough when
his very long service as an artist is
considered. As an impresario Mr.
Carleton is promoting the destinies of
his son, W. P. Carleton, a decidedly
clever young man who is succeeding
to the place his father occupied very
successfully.
The result is enitrely satisfactory in
"When Johnny Comes Marching
Home," and a new star and a new im
presario marched into the approval of
a very large audience at the Grand
last night The contribution, while
dealing with war times, treats of the
lighter side of life, as life was in the
early sixties. It is decidedly pictur
esque, this bright, old-fashioned
thing, with an old-fashioned name,
and the entire atmosphere Is charged
with the teeming suggestions of ro-

Law Suit Develops New I'Iuihcs of Ir
rigation Controversies.
A case making a new element in the
rights of water users has been decld
ed bv Judge Davis in favor of the first
to appropriate. Suit was brought by
Finlay Morrison against Floyd Officer,
both of Dayvllle, to enjoin defendant
from Interfering with the flow of
water from defendant's spring, after
appropriation by plaintiff by means
of a ditch on his own land. Defend
ant had tnken water from the stream
bv a ditch on his own land, above
plaintiff's ditch.
The case was begun in the Decem
ber term of court, hard fought from
start to finish, being argued on the
ISth of December. The case was
taken under advisement by the court
and the decision rendered Monday
