Acirdliig to the Deseret News of Salt Lake, the Short Line is getting anxious about the threatened invasion of Its territory by the Chicago & Northwestern, and Is arranging for rushing to completion of Its Yellow stone purk branch from St. Anthony. The News says that the Northwestern Is headed for Salt Lake with a branch line running down Cache canyon, but that the main line will run to llolse and on to the coast. The News quotes from a letter received from a man In St. Anthony, who Is said by the News to be an unimpeachable nuthorlty on railroad matters. The letter says In part: Right or Way Secured. Right of way has been secured to the Idaho line. Large tracts of coal lands huve been bought up in the Jackson Hole country und liuul west of the Teton mountains is being secur ed by the agents of this road; this was nil looked upon as certain Indications of the Snake river valley obtaining a trunk line', but now come the assur ances that these long-hoped-for Im provements will materialise. The ac tivity of the Rio Grande at Ogden In Increasing Its depot area and Improve ments had a significance that has not been hitherto fully understood. The news la that the Chicago & Northwestern will extend through the Jackson Hole country, coming through St. Anthony vln Marysvllle and contin uing Its main line southwest, touching the towns of Sugar City, Rexburg. Rlghy and most probably passing somewhat to the east of Idaho Falls, thus taking In the. large villages in that direction and opening up a new- portion of the Snake river valley. The main object in doing this, however. Is to make a more direct and quicker route to Ogden and Salt Lake City. Into Cache Valley. From here the road's plans are to take a little west of south course. touching Blarkfoot and many of the large hamlets east of the Short Line track. From Pocatello the course lies a little east of the Short Line route, thus throwing it into Cache calley without any preceptible Increase of distance, un was the case with the Short Line In former years. From Preston the road Intends par alleling the Short Line branch to Lo gan. Logan and Cache valley will bo given special attention. From Logan there are a number of routes planned and under advisement, but the one looked upon as the most feasible at present is from Logan to Wellsville and through Wellsville and Brlgham canyons and from Brlgham City a lit tle to the east of the Short Line, touch ing the towns of Wlllard, Hot Springs View.' North Ogden and then Into Og den. where connection will be made with the Rio Orande'and other roads.
