Coming direct from Washington, where he has been In conference with President Roosevelt In reference to livestock interests. President J. F. Ha genbarth, of the National Livestock association, stopped In Denver to visit with Secretary James H. Qwlnn, en route to his home at Salt Lake City. "The purpose of my visit to Wash ington," said Mr. Hagei.barth. "was to interest the president in the work of reopening the foreign markets to the American livestock growers. I wanted, If possible, to convince the authorities at Washington that there were as vital matters as rate troubles that should he legislated on." President Hugenbarth said that he had received assurances from Presi dent Roosevelt, officials of the de partment of agriculture and other government officials that they would do all they could to help the livestock Interests. Mr. Hageubarih said that his statement to the president was In part an follows: "We have lost more than 110,000,- 000 annually for the last three or four years In export markets for meats alone through commercial misunder standings that have resulted In tariff retaliation against meat from this country. Germany's discrimination has been the most severe, although the loss of the French market has cost livestock Interests 140,009.000 annu ally. "Reciprocity Is the solution of the problem reciprocity, preferably, and If we cannot get that, retaliation should be the method." "President Roosevelt agreed with me,' snld Mr. Hngenbarth, "and said that both reciprocity and retaliation could be adopted by the United States." The president and Mr, Hagenbarth agreed that the matter was one that should go before the congress. Pres dent Roosevelt requested Mr. Hagen barth to prepare a brief on the mat ter, which he will do. A conference between President Ha genbarth and Secretary Gwlnn will be held during the summer at which they will prepare a bill covering the the wishes of the association for pre. sentatlon to congress. In these days of strenuous progress the circus has not been standing still despite the fact that there are man? thoughtless persons who carelessly say of nil shows, "its the same old thing." The circus is tffe same old thing when It comes to being tho most pop ular and profitable .form of public amusement. Where Is the game of ball, billiards or cards or anything else in the way of entertainment that may be boog-ht for half a dollar that begiiiH to give the return for the money that the circus does? In this respect it dues nut matter how small the circus Is. But when It eomes to such an enor mous affair us the colossal circus that Norrls & Rowe have obtained, what Is there to he said? They have doz ens of new features that were not even dreamed of a few years ago, and some of them will be witnessed for the first time kere and :they are well worth seeing. It nust he remember ed that these shows hare a tremen dous advantage over the shows of a few years ago. They are owned and -operated by H. S. Rowe and C. I. Norrls. These able managers have the capital and the experlenoe necessary tu get any thing they want. Again, .these men have all earned their srle.ndld for tunes. They ore not under the ne cessity to economize and with their shows It is more a matter of pride than a source of income In exactly the same ratio as Die business man who after many years effort has es tablished a name that Is a valuable trade mark for all that Is good. There Is not space at command just now to enumerate their features, to say nothing of their sltindard acts they are too many. Norris and Eowe's greater circus will exhibit at Pendle ton Monday, June 5. PUGET SOUND EXPORTS., Amount for Five Months Double That of 1S04.
