Quebec, March 0. Leading Fores- Rome, March 4. It can be an nounced on the highest authority that no new American cardinal will be created at the consistory next week. Several things make this absolutely certain. It is believed that had the late Archbishup Corrigan of New York lived he. would have been made a prince of the church and the same honor bestowed on Archbishop Ire land of St. Paul. This would have given the conservatives and liberals In America each a new cardinal. The death of the New York prelate put an end to this plan. The pope has Interviewed every American prelate who has come to Rome since his elevation to the chair of St. Peter regarding the claims of the church in America to a larger representation in the sacred college. As a result of these interviews he is convinced, It is said, that the Ameri can bishops are anything but unani mous regarding the choice of the , prelate to be so honored. This ren ders It absolutely certain that no new American cardinal will be created for jsome time. As to the possibility of a foreign cardinal being chosen from some European nation other than Italy, It Is the general opinion here that if such a selection Is made it will be that of a new cardinal de curia for Germany, whose creation has recently been arranged with the German gov ernment. is believed to be little doubt of Its ap proval by the general conference. Arrange ments are rapidly n earing completion for the reception and entertainment of the hundreds of visitors who will be here next May for the general con ference of the United Brethren church. The body meets only once in three years, and there are a num ber of Important questions to be con sidered at the coming meeting. The one attracting most attention Is the matter of union with the Con gre rationalists and the Metho- Protestants. These two bodies have voted to form a "General Council of the United Churches," which is to meet every three or four years, but to have no power over the Individual bodies except an advisory one. The proposition Is said to be much favor ed among United Brethren and there teno::. glfite athletics.
