TEKS 10 Milton, Feb. 12. The new electric light plant, which haa been in opera tion for about a month, and never snad the least complaint about the work it had to do, moat flatly refused to turn a wheel or furnish a spark of Uaht for any citizen or church of the sown, regardless of denomination, Sunday night. Those who had lamps r candles in the house were fortun ate, and every available one was brought from Its dusty hiding place and pat Into use. The past two winters have been so mild that the cold snap which came en so suddenly Friday and Saturday, was a surprise to the people, and they were not prepared for It, espe cially the run of slush ice and trees trig up of the electric light flume. There is a general lamentation on very side of the loss of house plants and the frozen combs of chickens Sleighing and coasting is being in dulged In to its utmost. Boms thought the fruit was far enough along to kill it, but inves tigation proves that it is uninjured. Till some of the peach trees are killed which is undoubtedly the best for frultraisers In this vicinity. The people of Milton are not of a very charitable nature. At least that sj the opinion of a woman who paid the town a visit on Thursday of last Week. She said she was here in the interest of a crusade to raise money with which to rebuild the city of Je rusalem, so as to have it In readiness for the second coming of the Savior. She visited several of the business houses and asked for donations, but was turned away in nearly every In- stance. She possessed nothing to identify ' her, and even if she had, the people ef Milton do not take kindly to re building cities in foreign countries, j Alba, Feb. 11. There Is four inches of snow, and last night the thermom eter registered 22 below zero. Ed Brehm and wife have returned from Portland, where they have been spending the winter. Mr. Brehm has gone to his cattle camp at Dr. Camp bell's place on Cold Spring. H. T. Connell has returned home from the Cold Spring country, where he has been attending to his cattle. People living In the mountain coun try are not In favor of wide tires for wagons. Where they have been used they have proven to be a total fail ure. The reason Is that after a rain it is Impossible to keep them In the road, especially on the heavy grades, and old freighters with big teams are as shy of them as a sea captain la of a hoodooed ship. Besides, they find every small rock in the road, where a narrow tire shoves It out of the way. The wide tire may be all right In a level country, but it the law forbids us to use the narrow tire in the Blue mountains, and we have no other means of transportation, we will have to start a pack train. Dairymen here are busy putting up Ice. The late cold snap haa been a benefit In that respect, and has made a good crop of that kind of goods. The family of the late Cal Williams has moved from Pilot Rock back to Mountainhome, their former home. Bill Howard haa moved his cattle from Willow Springs here, to his ranch, where he haa ample feed to carry him through till grass comes, which looks some distance off at present Hoeller to Receive the Pallium.
